The Importance Of Joining The Peace Corps
You will read a bunch of letters that all consist of the exact same thing. They will either say how they feel like joining the Peace Corps will make them a better person, and how they really want to help others. But the truth is, everyone does and no doubt it will make you a better person or at least change your way of thinking. I am going to end up sitting here trying to convince you why you should accept my application to join the Peace Corps.. I will try to plead my case by saying how I grew up with a terrible background that involved emotional, and physical abuse, drugs, hospital, and prison visits and that is why I want to help others out by making it so they don’t have to grow up the way I did.

The truth is, people have it a lot worse than I do and I can’t complain about the life I have. Sure it wasn’t the best, but I am thankful for the way I turned out and for the person I am becoming. The people all over the world where the Peace Corps helps have it a lot harder than I ever have. Being able to go and help them out will be a life changing and a once in a lifetime experience. I’ve been wanting to do something like this for a really long time, but never have been able to figure out how to go until my mom suggested joining the Peace Corps. Everything finally seemed like it was laid out in

The brightness in the children’s eyes will be unforgettable as they get to experience something for the first time which otherwise would be normal to us, or even their parents faces seeing their children that happy. You can’t put a price on something like that. I know it will not change my life near as much as it will change theirs, and I would be beyond grateful for getting an opportunity to be a part of this life changing

On Thursday I had the opportunity to provide child life independently in the the cath lab, cardiac pre-op clinic, and the cardiology clinic. I carried and answered Maureen’s phone throughout the day. I checked in with the nurse practitioners and patients to determine if there were any child life needs. I followed up with a family to provide them a tour of the cardiac ICU and inpatient unit. I took on many of the responsibilities that Maureen has on a daily basis. For some reason, I always go into things with a negative perspective, it’s somewhat of a defense mechanism. My experience as a UCSF Mission Bay Volunteer completely diminished this defense mechanism. At first, I questioned volunteering at UCSF Mission Bay Hospital. I questioned if delivering newspapers and hot beverages would have any effect on patients. I was also scared and sad by the thought of being in the hospital each week and seeing how sick and upset people are. The main reason I wanted to become a volunteer was to gain an experience in the medical field. Little did I know, I would gain a lot more from being a UCSF volunteer. I never really thought I would form relationships with patients, visitors, and staff.…

I am currently a senior Political Science major, History minor, with a concentration in International Relations. I am also the chairman of the Howard University NAACP Political Action Committee. I am an academic, I am a student leader, but more importantly, I am a servant. It is my firm belief that the reason I was blessed to be given the opportunity to get a college education is so that I can use this privilege and knowledge to help others. Just recently in December I was fortunate enough to go on a service trip to South Africa with the YAALI program. There we did community service and connected with our brothers and sisters on the continent. This was a very impressionable experience for me, especially because it was my first time leaving…

This summer, I was blessed with an amazing experience. I had the opportunity to travel to Haiti on a mission trip. Of course, I was slightly nervous about traveling to a third world country, where I did not know the language, and the only people I would know would be the people from the church that I was traveling with. However, I knew this would be a life changing experience, so I took the leap! I am so grateful I did because every second was worth it! Our mission was to work with orphans, help homeschool English speaking children, and meet with the women’s group of Grand Savann Christian Church.…

Service is a passion of mine and I love to volunteer in my community through various service clubs, and scholarship pageants. At church, I've been the President of my Youth Group and a Volunteer Assistant Counselor and Staff Assistant for two years at our church girls’ summer camp. For nine years, I've been a Girl Scout and completed service projects that allowed me to earn my Bronze and Silver Awards. Now, I am working on my Gold Project, putting together a pamphlet with information about our support group campout and other resources for the Exstrophy community, which I plan to distribute…

In tenth grade, I went on a missions trip with my church to Mink Lake, which is a camp by the Gunflint Trail in northern Minnesota. During the missions trip, we prepared a camp for the summer. Some of my personal jobs were to help clean out two sheds and reorganize them, haul logs, and trim trees all over the camp. The trip benefitted myself and the other people on the missions trip because we were able to help people have a fun experience at camp over the summer, and we also helped the people running the camp to not have to work so hard to prepare the camp for the summer campers. Another reason it was a good experience for all of us workers is because we did not have our cell phones, so we were able to form new relationships with each other since we were not constantly distracted by our…

I have come to understand that I have an innate urge to help those more disadvantaged than I. I believe that God has placed this urge in my so that I can be an instrument of his will. We all have the potential and are called to me such an instrument and that calling comes in different avenues for each person. I believe that I have found one such avenue. I learned God understands and know the potential in each person and will task him or her with only the things they have the power to handle. I pray that as the years go forth and I enter into my professional career this experience and other experience will grant me the knowledge on how to create a nonprofit organization that will help the children of Haiti gain a proper education. I this yearning to construct something of that nature could only be placed in me from God and that’s how I know that I will be able to bring it into…

In the beginning of my freshman year in high school I have always been into JROTC, which led me to understand others and be a well-communicating person. It all started four years ago when I joined JROTC. I wanted to see how it worked and how it was beneficial to me. I must admit it was difficult in the beginning with being shy and not knowing what exactly I got myself into but that quickly changed once I started going to parades and football games.…

Should the United States require all adults to perform one year of community service by the age of 30? I personally think this is a topic that is not at all, relevant. I believe if someone wants to lend a helping hand, then they should lend a helping hand. If you don't prefer to do this kind of community service, the government shouldn't force you to do so. There would be a lot of change in how community service is done today if the government required at least one year to be served by the age of 30.…

    My Working Experience

Working has showed me how much effort is required just to sustain what most Americans would consider a normal life. Our sense of normalcy in life is warped by our surroundings. While working, my surroundings have included coworkers who worked long hours over multiple jobs, as this was the only way they could provide a decent life for their families. Currently I am working at a dental lab, where I assist in the production and delivery of a variety of different dental products for dentists. As part of my job, I have regularly visited dental offices in rougher parts of Hartford, where poverty is everywhere. Seeing the normal daily life of the people around me has forced me to realize how unbelievably fortunate I have been throughout my life. A greater awareness of how brutal daily life can be in other countries has the same effect on me. I know that all the struggles and tribulations I have experienced in my life are trivial relative to the suffering that too many people in the world have experienced. This knowledge lies at the essence of what personally drives me to improve myself. It is my responsibility to make the most out of all the opportunities I have to better myself in order to have more of a positive impact on the…

Although they had nothing they were still happy people and when we would give them an item such as clothes, toys, or even just basic medicine, they looked so happy because items like clothes, toys, and basic medicine change their life and the Dominican people were very grateful for them. During this trip I realized that in life I take many things for granted and that some of the items I feel are just a part of everyday life and are nothing special are something that can change someone's life. Community service makes me a better person because I recognize the luxuries in life that I am given compared to other people. Serving the least favored open up my eyes to the world round me and shows me what the world is really like outside of my bubble. When I participate community service I become aware that in order to have a happy life you do not need to have the most expensive items all you need are people around you who love and support you. Another realization when performing community service is that you register that helping other people is a very important action to take in order to help the people's lives get better so they can have more opportunities in the world because most of…
