In the trenches there is rats. “ The rats have become much more numerous lately because the trenches are no longer in good condition.” (Source 2) The trenches are in horrible condition which cause the rats to come. Not only are the rats gross but looking at their nude tails are nauseating. The trenches are a waste and you wouldn't believe that there could still be men. In the trenches we have to sleep in our clothes and we also need to cut our hair short so that it’s easier to tuck inside our caps.
Dressing means just simply putting on our boots. “There were times when we had to scrape the lice off with the blunt edge of a knife” (Source 4) When ever there was lice on us we needed to scrap it off with the edge of a knife. The worse part of being in the trenches was wondering if you were soon going to get trench foot. Our feet swelled to two to three times as our normal size and go completely dead. We were able to stick a bayonet into our foot and not feel a thing. In the trenches we've heard men cry and scream with pain and many have had to have their foot or legs amputated. And if we're lucky enough not to lose our foot the swelling starts to go
down.
