This was reinforced by Mr Van Daan's despicable actions. During this time phrase food was scarce for people living in the annexe. It seemed that minor preices of food were being extracted by rats. This extraction of food had been progressing for a large period of time and started to become a problem. June 1944 in the middle of the night, Mrs Frank hears a loud creak. She quietly walks down the stairs and caught Mr Van Daan stealing food from the food supply. Everyone including Mrs Frank thought it was rats stealing the food. She was utterly disgusted and this was demonstrated by her following words,"We're all of us hungry. I see the children getting thinner and thinner.
Your own son Peter- I've heard him moan in his sleep, he's so hungry. And you come in the night and steal food that should go to them- to the children". As Mrs Franks daughter Margot, makes her way towards the kitchen to see what all the shouting was for, she was thrilled and surprised to see and hear what had happened and in great despair and sadness mentioned, "Oh, no! No. We haven't sunk so far to fight over a handful of rotten potatoes". Everyone who made their way downstairs were then surprised to hear Mrs Franks lose her calm composure by announcing to Mrs Van Daan, "Don't think I haven't seen you. Always saving the choicest bits for him. I've watched you day after day and I've held my tongue. But not any longer. Not after this. Now, I want him to go. I want him to get out of here". It is obvious from the case that living in captivity brings out the worst in people such anger, greed and selfishness.
