The Importance Of Lying In Catcher In The Rye
In conclusion, Salinger depicts different reasons for Holden’s compulsive lying to his family members and female characters. Holden lies to women to gain their attention and he can not have a genuine relationship with anyone without lying, but he lies to his family because he cares about them. Also, he wants to protect them and hopes that his lying will avoid their disappointment towards him. At the end of the novel, Holden is given an opportunity to redeem himself; he learns that his negative views towards life made him shut down important people relationally. Holden has to find an alternate way of expressing his emotions without fooling others or himself because he will end up losing very ones that care about him. Lying does not make Holden
feel happier especially when he is the only one that understands the joke that he plays on people. If one was to make a joke or fool around with someone's mind, the only way it would be funny is if another person understood it.
