The Importance of Tawbah in Islam
Introduction
To maintain your relationship with Allah (SWT) , everyone who worships Allah (SWT) must sincerely regret their sins and feel sorry for what they had done and ask for forgiveness (perform Tawbah) from Allah (SWT) .
Hadhrat Muhaddith-e-Deccan says about the importance and the conditions of repentance (Tawbah):
“Astaghfaar is when you say Astaghfirullah with your tongue and regret with your heart and ask for forgiveness of Allah (SWT) . When you commit a sin and then perform Tawbah, and then commit a sin and believe that your Tawbah had not been accepted, this is wrong. This is whispering from of Shaytan. Your Tawbah had been accepted.”
If you repent with a sincere heart and decide firmly not to commit a sin, then hopefully, you will not commit a sin again.
Translation of Hadith: The one who repents from a sin is like the one who did not sin at all.
وَاسْتَغْفِرِ اللّهِ إِنَّ اللّهَ كَانَ غَفُورًا رَّحِيمًا
Hadith No: 4240, Majma Uz Zawaaid,
Vol. 10, Pg No: 200).

When you repent, all the sins until now are forgiven. Not only they are forgiven, but they are also wiped out from your records of deeds حالصال. If you end up sinning again, repent again. It should be accepted if you are sincere and honest about asking to be forgiven.

Worship done without Tawbah is accepted, but worship after Tawbah is good.
Say the words mentioned in the Hadith: Astaghfirullahil Azeem Al Ladhi La Ilaha Illa Huwal Hayyul Qayyumu Wa Atubu Ilaih.

Learn this and if you are not able to remember, say: Astaghfirullah. This means: “O Allah (SWT) ! I beg for Your forgiveness.”

Daily, when you lie down on your bed, recite Astaghfaar three times. If you do this, all the sins of the day are wiped out from

This brings me to my final point. We are saved from our sins by faith. When we hear the gospel, we must have faith and believe that the word is true. Then must trust in the Lord our God, fully. The final act involves repentance. This does not just merely mean to feel sorry for what we have done. We have to actually have a “change of mind” and turn from our wicked…

Dr. Lickerman explains that,”To label anyone, even the most despicable of figures, as purely evil is to delude ourselves”(Redemption). Labeling Amir as a bad person suggest that he never did anything to change or continued to act as the same misguided boy from his past. Even with his weaknesses he turns his life around and transcends to do the right thing instead of behaving egocentrically. He puts massive efforts in helping Sohrab recover emotionally and physically. His recovery suits as his last step in finding peace with himself and accepting that he has no power in changing the past. Amir becomes a parental figure for him which helps him deal with his emotions until Amir breaks his promise. When Amir breaks his promise, he reminisces his past betrayal and must take another step to make things right with Sohrab. After the incident Amir saves Sohrab from the danger of Afghanistan and takes him back to America. Amir then expresses that he has, “brought Hassan's son from Afghanistan to America, lifting him from the certainty of turmoil" (Hosseini 356). His feelings change from guiltiness and self condemnation to clarity and peace when he stands up for Sohrab. He becomes his protector from society and himself. When General Taheri asks why he made such an effort for a Hazara, Amir responds, “He’s my nephew. That's what you tell people when they ask... You will never refer to him as ‘Hazara boy’...he has a name” (Hosseini 361). Standing up for Sohrab shows Amir’s development throughout the story, proving his goodness and redemption. According to Diane Barth’s study on redemption, “Development and growth only occur when we are able to recognize and attempt to rectify our transgressions”(How Much Guilt is Enough). Amir works his way slowly to change his actions becoming someone honest, caring, and…

Reconciliation can be described, as a sacrament of "penance" as this describes the essential interior disposition required for this sacrament. As explained in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, it is called the sacrament of penance, because it consecrates the penitent’s personal and ecclesial steps of conversion, penance, and satisfaction. The sacrament of reconciliation is a sacrament in which the priest, as the agent of God, forgives sins committed after baptism, when the sinner is heartily sorry for them, sincerely confesses them, and is willing to make satisfaction for them. This power to forgive sin, which Jesus conferred upon his apostles, is now given to priests. When the priest raises his hand and says these words, "I absolve thee from thy sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.” the penitent’s sins are forgiven. These are called "the words of absolution." This makes reconciliation a sacrament of “ Forgiveness”. It is called the sacrament of confession, since the disclosure or confession of sins to a priest is an…

In the second article I chose to read, Hall and Fincham (2005) discuss the concept of self-forgiveness. Their analysis seeks to get to the heart of what it means and essentially what it takes to forgive oneself for wrongdoing and reckless abandon. Enright (1996) defines self-forgiveness as “a willingness to abandon self-resentment in the face of one’s own acknowledged objective wrong, while fostering compassion, generosity, and love toward oneself.” Hall and Fincham (2005) argue that self-forgiveness is an internal and volatile aberration that results in both a retaliatory and benevolent appeal on behalf of the offender. The reason for this is because the offender is in conflict with their ability to do wrong and then compensate with righteous action in rebuttal to their transgression. After the stage of victim identification and reconciliation, avoidance occurs which puts the offender and any sense or notion of wrongdoing they may have had, at peace with themselves (Hall & Fincham, 2005). Furthermore, Hall and Fincham (2005) deduce that self-forgiveness does not imply an exemption from heartache, frustration, or regret. The offender will not magically fail to remember or begin to root for such behavior that should lead to another bout with personal disdain and disappointment. In fact, the offender will undergo extensive self-analysis and even consider the implications of interpersonal forgiveness from oneself toward another had they committed a similar offense. Lastly, Hall and Fincham (2005) give attention to the moral aspects of the self-forgiveness concept. According to Horsbrugh (1974) interpersonal forgiveness is bound by biblical scripture which Jesus himself states that “When you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins”…

This signifies that one may return to their original state. Every Jew must do Teshuvah, and in the Tenakh is state a whole day should be spent doing it. There are four steps of which we must do, 1. Leaving the Sin and stopping it occurring. 2. Regret, we must be genuinely ashamed and embarrassed of our actions. 3. Asking for forgiveness, if it was a personal sin we declare this forgiveness to G-d. If we did however do it to another person, we must ask them for forgiveness. 4. Acceptance for the Future, to accept that one will never commit the sin again. This process makes amend to our fresh record for the year, and repairs relationships between friends as the Teshuvah process shows great sincerity and apology. Moreover, series of prayers take place during the month of Ellul which go by the name of Selichot. These prayers ask for forgiveness, the Shofah accompanies the prayers to announce the coming of Rosh Hashana. There are other prayers asking for forgiveness, however we must request forgiveness personally not just in…
