The Importance Of The Protest In The National Football League
The ongoing controversy taking place in the National Football League (NFL) is the protesting during the playing of the national anthem. The protest was originally started in the 2016-2017 season by Colin Kaepernick, who played quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers at the time. He, in fact, sat for the anthem and received a great deal of backlash from the public. Many players followed suit by kneeling, sitting, locking arms and showing solidarity. The backlash has continued and some fans are even boycotting the NFL. These NFL players should not be criticised due to the fact what they’re actually protesting- racial injustice for African Americans- is being completely being ignored because the flag is involved.

Critics have bashed these players for “disrespecting the flag” and “disrespecting the military” when that is not what they are aiming to do. They want to get their message across and they feel like the best way to display it is by protesting on a national stage. Players simply want to bring awareness to the ongoing issue of police brutality towards African Americans and the racial injustice that comes along with it. Critics of the protest have also called players “un-American.” That is completely false because they are doing the most American thing anyone can do by peacefully protesting for what they believe in. They are not inflicting any harm on people. They are not raiding cities and causing disturbances, like the protesters in Charlottesville did when they rioted the streets carrying tiki torches and beating up innocent civilians while spitting out hateful pro-White rhetoric. They are just kneeling, sitting or locking arms instead of standing. The players showcased their unity to the entire country, even when their own President shows his hatred towards them by

Colin stated “I am not going to stand up and show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.” Chip Kelly, his coach, supported him protesting. Many people dislike this however, I am fine with it. I see it as them trying to get across a point about a problem in the world, such as racism. Maybe they just think of the American flag do to all the problems in the world. For example it states,“He, too, saw the flag in a different light due to the racism he faced every day. As he wrote in his 1972 autobiography, "I cannot stand and sing the anthem. I cannot salute the flag; I know that I am a black man in a white world." The take a knee movement is not the first protest the National Anthem has seen, it is just the latest in a long history of “unpatriotic behavior.” Perhaps the most infamous protest was a result of the black power salute held by Tommie Smith and John Carlos in the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, “they didn’t [take a knee]. Instead they raised a fist” (Brown). The Civil Rights movements of the 1960s and 1970s were a time of upheaval for various minority groups of American society, including the black rights movement. Holding a fist instead of placing a hand over the heart got the gold and bronze medals respectively strip from Smith and Carols, for calling attention to real problems that still exist in our country. These brave men “wore beads and a scarf to protest lynchings. And when the national anthem was played, they lowered their heads in defiance and raised their fists in a Black Power salute that rocked the world” (Brown). These acts of defiance have set a stage for other individuals to speak out again the injustice plaguing our society. The downplay of such circumstances is unpatriotic and inhumane, more so than refusing to stand during the National…

Many people are in agreement that Kaepernick has the right to choose whether he wants to stand or kneel for the National Anthem. People who support Kaepernick would say that he is protesting but protesting what? Is he protesting the segregation of white and black people? In the article “Kaepernick had no choice but to kneel” by John McWhorter, McWhorter states “The tension between black people and the cops is not just one more race issue roiling the nation: it is the key one. It is the central cause of black people’s sense of general alienation, the first thing that comes up when you ask black people why they think racism defines their lives. It was what the panthers were all about, what gangsta rap was all about, what the O.J. Simpson vigilante-justice…

From your everyday fan to players, coaches, owners and even the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump. And not everyone was in favor of Kaepernick choice to protest during the National Anthem. “I agree that America is not perfect. I agree that there are a lot of issues with minorities in this country. And I agree that we should do something about it. But I don't know if the most effective way is to sit down when the National Anthem of a country that has provided you freedom and is provided you $60 million a year is the best way to do it, when there are black minorities that are dying in Iraq and Afghanistan that are protecting our freedom for less than $20,000 a year” (Alejandro Villanueva, Pittsburgh Steelers offensive lineman, Aug. 29, 2016). But the biggest moment during the last 13 months happened on September 22 2017 when president Donald Trump stated “Wouldn't you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects the flag, to say get that son of a bitch off the field right now. He's fired. He's fired”. This single quote would spark outrage…
