The Impossibility of the American Dream Speech- Of Mice and Men
Impossibility of the American Dream Speech Martin Luther King Jr. once said "I have a dream." He stood in front of an audience of people and injected those listening with passion and emotion. He filled their lungs with fresh ideas of a new beginning. He infected the world with his dream, and inspired others to chase theirs. Just like everyone else, Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream. The problem with this is simply that dreams aren't always meant to come true. In the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, George and Lennie have a dream. As they travel from ranch to ranch, the hope they have that they can make their dream a reality grows increasing strong. In a perfect world, George and Lennie would save up enough money to buy themselves their very own ranch, and even have rabbits that Lennie will tend to. "Reach for the stars" is an expression used to encourage one to try and make their dreams come true no matter what the odds are, however, in this case George and Lennie have their aim set somewhere much farther out in the universe than the stars. In life, everyone is given a different situation, a different life to live, almost an entirely different world to teach us, shape us, and make us who we are meant to be. We are to take what we are given, and make the most out of what we have. In life, we are to set goals - both realistic and not. We are to dream. And what George was given is Lennie. Lennie is special, he is both a blessing and a curse. Lennie isn't like everyone else; he is slower and requires more patience and attention than most. George is to take care of Lennie- a blessing that keeps him from feeling the infectious loneliness ranchers feel, and a curse that gives him an extra responsibility. But most of all, Lennie makes George believe in things he never thought he could, and then takes it all away. In the end, George sees that some dreams are never meant to come true. He experiences the unfairness of life and death. Martin Luther King Jr. had

Believe it or not Martin Luther King almost didn’t give the “ I Have a Dream” speech. Mahalia Jackson encouraged King to go ahead and tell the people watching about the speech. King decided to go for it and improvised the rest of the speech. The speech gave people a realization on how different black people were treated compared to the whites. He had a dream that one day everyone would be able walk and communicate without being discriminated against. He wanted to point out that your skin color shouldn’t make you any different than anyone else. Everyone should be able to walk the same streets, interact with whom they like. King teaches one that all of this starts with the children. If you teach a kid from a young age to be a certain way then that’s what he’ll turn out to be but if you tell them they can have the freedom to interact with any kid they like to that’s a change. In the speech he said that he’ll like for the children of a slave and the children of a slave owner to be able to grow up together, in the same environment and not feel any different.…
