One of the problems in the Industrialization Era was unfair treatment. This type of treatment happened when the Chinese immigrants came in from Angel Island. These immigrants had to spend many months or years in the building. That’s unlike Ellis Island, where the immigrants went in and out and took at most a month. Also, at Angel Island they were stripped down, while at Ellis Island they were only checked for dangerous or infectious diseases.
The next
problem we had during this time period was the working conditions in factories. While working many would get injured or they would die. Also, while working the would get infections in their eyes and then they are blind. The railroad conditions were terrible and brutal. Workers had to do their jobs for long hours while working outside in the hot sun and using dynamite and their hands as tools. Starting at six years old, all children would have to start working to help provide for their families.
Another problem that they had during this time was the immigrants’ housing conditions. When one room caught on fire, it would spread to the rest of the house and the neighboring tenements, because they were all in close proximity. Their housing was awful, there were six rooms in a floor with 4 families to one room. Each room had one bathroom to share, one toilet, sink and bathtub. All of the families would share the same bathtub, they could only use the water that was in the bathtub, nothing more. When they take a bath the father gets first, then the mother and it goes down to the children by age. By the time the family was done with their baths, the water in the tub would be almost black from the dirt.
Women in this era, were treated unfairly and didn’t have any rights to begin with, they weren’t allowed to vote. When women worked, wages were much less than the men working for the same job.
Also, African-Americans were treated unfairly. The Africans were not allowed to vote just like women. They had to do all the jobs that nobody wanted to do. They did most of the manual labor in this country. African-Americans were looked at lower class people just because of their color skin. There was Jim-Crow Laws set against them saying that they were not allowed to use any of the same things as the whites.
Another Problem was that children were working starting at a very young age. These kids should have been able to go to school and get an education. If the children were able to get an education then they would have a better job. Having a better job would get the family more money. When they had more money than they would live somewhere safer.
The last problem that the United states had at this time was City Sanitation. Cities created sewer systems which then made the cities smell and look dirty. Poor sanitation and communicable diseases were among the greatest causes of death among urban working class populations. In the 19th century, health conditions improved with better sanitation, but urban people, especially small children, continued to die from diseases spreading through the cramped living conditions.
In the end, we all feel ashamed about Industrialization because of how horrible that children, women, lower classmen and immigrants were treated. The rich United States citizens did not help the poor at all, they were unfair to everyone else. Also, the housing, factories, payment and inequality for both women and blacks were unbearable.
