In a survey of 23 students, we asked them this question, “Does the media make you feel bad about your body, lifestyle and personality? 19 said yes without hesitation. Is it because in society, when we first meet someone our immediate reaction is to judge others? Especially based on their body weight or type, and what kind of clothes are on their back? This is the harsh reality that's sadly true. Body malcontentment can be causes of eating disorders. “ But, research is increasingly clear that media does indeed contribute and that exposure to and pressure exerted by media increase body dissatisfaction and disordered eating.” (General Information | National Eating Disorders Association.)
The idea to be thin is portrayed in advertising. Advertising makes women look unrealistic and that's why women may have the urge to achieve a certain thinness, in most cases women do not even need to lose weight and become less thinner. If one tries to lose more weight while she is already at a healthy weight she could risk becoming anorexic. Starvation, Bulimia, and Anorexia and other eating disorders are not the right way to lose weight. “ Role Models found 66% of girls thought that media portrayals women are a reason of why girls go on diets.” ("A Distorted Perception of Beauty - Dove Self-Esteem Project)
Overall, with our extensive research about the media's effects on society, Joana and I both agree that social media makes us and others feel bad about our body, lifestyle, self worth and personality. Even though there is some good that comes with all
