THE INFLUENCE OF MEDIA VIOLENCE ON YOUTH
Media violence research shows that children who play video games, computer
games and music videos are acting out due to the violence they are watching. Because of
media violence children are acting out aggressively to their peers. The effects on youth
can be very harmful. Children may become less sensitive to the suffering and pain and
suffering of others. Children may become more fearful to the world around them and may
be more likely to behave in aggressive or harmful ways towards others.
First, there has been many studies about the effect of television violence on children.
If they’re excited by violent scene’s this may cause excitement that may have an effect
on there behavior and a rewarding feeling that would be associated with violence. Some
children grow up watching violent shows and movies then later in life are dealing with
stress, lack of guidance and support which leads them to act out these violent crimes.
There has been incidents of school violence like the Columbia High School massacre,
Virginia Tech massacre and the Bath School disaster.
Secondly, Research shows that children are spending increasing amounts of time
playing video games, an average of 13 hours per week for boys and five hours for girls.
The majority of video games include violence and about half of the incidents result in
serious injuries. Violent video games can increase children’s aggression and also
anxiety. When they get upset they tend to express it by crying or attacking something.
They can be mean to a dog or pet. The American Psychological Association say children
playing violent games are less caring and helpful towards their pets. These are some of
