The Influence Of Puritanism On American Identity
Puritanism had a large impact on the development of the American identity, which is evident in Jonathan Edwards's sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God." In his sermon he states how Americans need to fight for their freedoms that are not only given to them by the nation and new government, but also by God himself. His sermons also pushed people to resist the British and fight for their rights, and to gain their freedom from them. It had a great influence on how Americans thought about their country and themselves. He wanted to disturb people's comfortableness and make notice to them what would happen to them and the country if they did not convert and follow God.
