What do you consider when you hear the words red, white, and blue? Do you naturally think about the flag of the United States of America? Our flag, as we probably see it today, is not the first flag with stars and stripes to be made. After the original thirteen colonies declared independence in 1776, Betsy Ross would sew the first U.S. Flag displaying the colors red, white and blue. The First Continental Congress on June 14, 1777, changed the shape of the stars from the circle pattern of the Ross design to the block shape we recognize today. Congress would give meaning to the colors of the flag in 1777. White would imply purity and innocence; red would be hardiness and valor; blue would become vigilance, perseverance…
In the book Flags of Our Fathers by James Bradley is a novel about the brave men in the past wars. "From a guy who is proud he's a Marine and in his country's service" (Ira Hayes, 77). Is a quote showing how proud the soldiers and marines are for serving our country. John Bradley kept to himself regarding his memories of Iwo Jima, the flag raising and what followed. As a result, in order to write this book, his son, James, set out to research the lives of his own father, from Appleton, Wisconsin; Rene Ragnon, from Manchester, New Hampshire; Harlon Block, from the Rio Grande Valley of Texas; Franklin Sousley, from Hilltop, Kentucky; Mike Strank, a Czech immigrant raised in Franklin Borough, Pennsylvania; and Ira Hayes,…
Betsy Ross is considered the original creator of the American Flag while it was still a developing nation. She lived for a total of 84years which is from 1752-1836. Unfortunately, many people think of Betsy as an average woman in the 18th century. This is because there is no proof of the fact that she created the flag. It is not established as a historical fact, since there is no historical evidence, and therefore, many people consider this statement to be a myth. Betsy purposely chose the colors on the American flag because they resembled certain aspects of our country. Red showed valor, white displayed innocence, and blue resembled vigilance. The general of the Continental Army at the time, George Washington, came to Mrs. Ross’ house and…
My historical bumper sticker is based on some of the states wanting a Bill of Rights added to the Constitution. They wanted a Bill of Rights to make sure the government was not able to take away any of the people's rights or gain too much power. My slogan addresses the states', for example Massachusetts', point of view. It says, "The Bill of Rights is Right for U.S." which can be read as "United States" or "us" showing the states are unified over wanting amendments and that they believe a Bill of Rights is what the Constitution needs. I chose to do red, white and blue coloration because if a Bill of Rights was promised then the states would ratify the Constitution, therefore making them a part of the United States of America whose colors are…
The American Revolution, greatly known as the Revolutionary War, was a time of battle. Battle between the colonies and the British. The sole goal of this war was to gain independence from the British rule. Betsy Ross and her sewing abilities changed America and the colonies forever. We stand to this, we pledge to this simple piece of fabric, the American Flag. Betsy Ross being an upholstering apprentice sewed together the colonies one thread at a time!…
Another special meaning of being American is to come together in times of struggle and also in times of celebration. Events such as the moon landing, and the JFK assassination, and 911. Brung us Americans down in the dumps, and on the edge of our feet. But one thing's for sure. When we get knocked down we come together as a nation and stand right back up. Because Americans are strong and brave, and prideful and…
It was June 14, 1777 when the United States Congress created and officially announces the American flag to be represented as a symbol of Nationalism and refutation of secessionism. The United States American flag is one of most significant symbol that is hanged in front of many private properties especially in front of my porch. My family decided to purchase the American flag because it symbolizes a meaning for freedom and opportunities. During the Vietnam War, the united States have become involve in the war to promote democracy, in which my family immigrated and settle within the United States for that purpose.…
When one hears the words red, white, and blue the immediate thought travels to the American flag, but there is another red, white, and blue in the United States; the Confederate flag. There are many conflicting thoughts surrounding the Confederate flag. Is it a symbol or racism because of its historical significance or is it a symbol of “Southern Pride” because the South created it? The Confederate flag is seen as a symbol of racism because of the leaders who succeed from the Union and stood under the flag, the racial tension created in school districts, and the statistics recorded.…
The flag means bravely, celebration & respect to me. First the flag represents bravely because it reminds some people about the people in war being brave of being in war.…
Personally, I do not feel this is a fair analogy. While the Confederate Flag is certainly a reminder of a dark period in American History, it should not be compared to the Nazi Flag or a Soviet Flag. Although slavery was one of the major issues involved in the South choosing to secede there were many others as well. At no point was the Confederate Flag’s main purpose to represent only slavery. While slavery was indeed a terrible thing, the slaves at that time ever experienced the mass executions the way the Jews did under Hitler’s dominance. The Confederate Flag represented an attempt by the South to separate itself from the Union. In which today’s society, I feel when the Confederate Flag is beginning displayed one should be reminded a period…
What the United States flag means to me is freedom. I hear the stories of the people who have their whole life chosen for them in different countries. Which sounds absolutely horrifying to me. I enjoy being able to decide my future like what kind of job i'm going to have or what college I’m going to go to. I don’t want that taken away from me.The Flag also ensures me as much safety as possible. What I mean by that is we have so many people who risked their life and are risking their life right now to keep that flag standing. All those people who have died died to ensure that I and everyone else live free and that means the world to me.…
The meaning behind the Confederate Flag or as some would call it the “The Rebel Flag” varies for different people. Some groups of people when they see or think about the rebel flag they see how it symbolizes that the whites were fighting to protect the honor, pride and cultural heritage of the South. To some other groups of people when think or see the Confederate flag they are only reminded about how south was fighting to keep slavery, to build an empire on slavery, and the flag promotes racism. So which meaning behind the Confederate flag is right? Whether people believe the Confederate flag represents slavery and racism or believe that it represents the culture and heritage, the fact remains that the flag historically represents the southern…
Within the United States of America, arguments, involving the Confederate Flag, are solved every sngle day. However, some controversies have managed to carry on from the 1800’s until present day without any solution. The text and symbolic meaning behind the “Confederate Flag” is a perfect example. The Confederate Flag is one of America’s most embattled symbolic controversies. Created in 1861in a battle between the South, Confederates, and the North, Union, two men by the name P.G.T. Beauregard and Congressman William P. Miles designed and created a flag that would represent the true southern pride and demands that would not only bring about conflict with one half of the nation but also with our American society today. The South wanted to fulfill their demands of a new government with a victory, but the North opposed that thought. Today, people in our society misunderstand and misinterpret the true meaning behind the Confederate Flag and what it represents. People have came to believe that the Confederate Flag represents slavery in the 19th century, but in actuality it represents people wanting to govern themselves.…
When reading the Red Badge of Courage, it is necessary to understand the symbolism that Stephen Crane has created throughout the whole book. Without understanding the true intent of color use, this book loses a meaningful interpretation that is needed to truly understand the main character, his feelings and actions. Crane uses very distinct colors in his text to represent various elements that the main character, Henry or "the youth", is feeling along his adventure of enlisting into battle. Red, yellow and gray are the main color's Crane uses consistently in the majority of the chapters to describe Henry's inner conflicts and feelings. The color purple is mentioned very briefly but reflects Henry's feelings in a powerful manner. Certain colors dominate throughout the book and there is a change of domination as Henry matures into a real soldier.…
