The villagers have no reason in keeping the black box . “Mr. Summers spoke frequently to the villagers about making a new box, but no one liked to upset even as much tradition as was represented by the black box” (397).They have so much pride with the black box and want to keep the same appearance. Their beliefs that the box must not change, they fear change. As though one change might lead to other changes. Some towns already have stopped holding lotteries, but these villagers do not seem to be headed in the same direction. “Seventy-seventh year I been in the lottery, Old Man Warner said” (401). Many years had pass and the old warner had lived many lotteries, he had experience in doing the same tradition every year. People discuss nearby town has stopped the ritual .They don't want to change, the reason is people believe cancelling will bring poor crop growth. “Pack of crazy fools” (400). Warner beliefs said if people stopped doing the ritual, they are going to back to the era where people used to live on caves in other words without the lottery, people are just going to be savages with no reason. “Although the villagers had forgotten the ritual and lost the original black box, they still remembered to use stones”(403). The original box may be lost and replaced but violence of the lottery continues , villagers had been lead to the need essential of killing . They don't care if the black box has been changed in the outside the villagers are all too eager to embrace what remains, eagerly picking up the stones and carrying on the “tradition” for another year without the feeling of
