2. Assembly at Meryton. (pg 8) * Elizabeth has to sit out two dances (lack of gentlemen). * To Darcy, Elizabeth is only “tolerable” and “not handsome enough to tempt” him. * He thinks Elizabeth to be plain and unattractive and she doesn’t feel very cordial towards him.
3. Darcy’s superiority. (pg 12) * He has a superior understanding than Bingley, but he is also haughty reserved and fastidious. His manners are not inviting and he is continually giving offence. * He saw people of little beauty and no fashion at Meryton assembly. (Quick to judge, as he did to Elizabeth.)
4. Lucas Lodge. (pg 14-15) * Here we find out that Darcy doesn’t speak much, unless amongst close friends. (He’s reserved/shy) * He “mortified” Elizabeth’s pride by not asking her to dance and she doesn’t forgive him for that.
5. Longbourn ladies wait on Netherfield. (pg 18-19) * Darcy observes Elizabeth and starts to find her attractive. “The beautiful expression in her dark eyes”. * He finds her “figure to be light and pleasing” and is caught by the easy playfulness of her manners. * She knew nothing of his observations and he begins to listen to her conversations in the hope to find out more about her. * Elizabeth notices him, becomes annoyed and confronts him in a round-about, playful manner.
6. Sir William Lucas introduces Darcy to Elizabeth (pg 20-21) * Sir William introduces Elizabeth as a desirable dance partner. Darcy is surprised but this time he is willing to dance with her. * But Elizabeth refuses the offer to spite him for injuring her pride previously.
