The Interlude is a story that reveals how a person cannot get away from what he or she did in the past because other persons remember and behave as if the past must never die. The Author did a good job at the description of the characters, which helped the reader better understand the roles they play in the story. The main character of this story, Willis, a hostile desperado, who was known as ‘The Tiger’ but the tiger in him tamed after spending two years jail term. Another important character in the story is Little John, a fearless brave man, who liked to act bad but had never been to jail. Little
John was a brave desperado unlike the other desperadoes, he feared nothing, not even the almighty Tiger. It took two years of hunger, brutality and pains from the warders to tame fearless Willis. This shows the consequence of one’s acts considered as fixing one’s lot, in the future existence. Experiencing what has been done to others like torture, bullying and brutality teaches a lot of lesson of morals and how to treat people. Willis got back to San Fernando with a fearful heart but two years made a difference to the town, which seemed more open and spread out. The fear in Willis heart had died down perhaps because no one recognized him or some had forgiven him and left the past behind them. All the same, he felt guilt, tension, discomfort, sense of shame.
He stood by the orange-stall to refresh himself, then little John walked right behind him calling
‘tiger’ causing a stir by everyone on the street. Willis heart dropped and the tiger in him came out once again because he needed to protect himself, so he grabbed a knife from the orange- vendor and drove it between Little John’s ribs, blood gushed out and Willis was arrested again.
