The Intermountain Region is a region that is located in parts of Canada and America, while lying between the Rocky and Coast Mountains, the Cascades and the Sierra Nevada. The high plateaus and isolated mountains with the only deserts in the US of A are very sparsely populated (excluding major cities). In Canada, this region is consisted of the interior plateau valleys of BC and the Yukon.
The economic development of the Intermountain Region is greatly affected by its topography which is full of streams and rivers which instead of flowing into the sea, instead flow into the brackish lakes or disappear into desert sinks. However, there are still some that do reach into the ocean. The dry deserts of parts of the Intermountain Regions do not do well when it comes to agriculture- farming operational costs have increased greatly because of the need for irrigation which means that contrastingly irrigation companies generate lots of income for the region and nation as a whole. But this may be dangerous as the companies are going into long term debt from rushing to upgrade their systems in the next century. Death Valley does just fine though with its lack of water, do to being a large tourist attraction with its warm climate in that area, contributing to the economic development.
As before mentioned, the climate in the Intermountain Region varies with elevation and location, in some parts it is cold and wet or dry and hot in winters. Going southward winters are lacking in precipitation and are dry and short. North, precipitation is also scarce but the climate is more moderate with dry, hot summers and moist winters. Also in the north, because the summers are shorter the growing season is shorter as well, which does not help the agriculture industry. As you go farther down the eastern slopes of the mountains, air retains moisture and warms up. The Intermountain Region is so dry because of this rain shadow effect.
As a cause of this, vegetation is made up largely of sparse grassland and plants that do well in semi-desert or desert climates. The Intermountain Region is full of contradictions however, as the areas that are higher up are covered in forests full of pine trees. These pine trees cover over 60 million hectares contributing 15 Billion dollars to the foresting industry, but because of the industry's clear cutting of old growth forests and damaging logging practices, approximately 36 million hectares are now protected.
Now, will be moving on to the settlement patterns of the Intermountain Region. Climates in the Intermountain Region also make for an unappealing living area, going from extremes of being either cold and wet or hot and dry. As these climates are so inhospitable, vegetation is few and far and do not make for easy access to produce, etc... Most areas of the Intermountain Region are thinly populated because of the deserts and high mountains. They are more densely populated around major cities such as Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, Phoenix, and Denver in the south. In the north there is Prince George and Williams Lake.
In conclusion, Topography, climate and vegetation greatly influence the economy of regions as well as the settlement patterns. The Intermountain Region is diverse in its ways of economic gain and topography.

1. Research on the Front Range Mountains located in the Rocky Mountain region has brought about a lot of findings that they intend to share with the rest of the community. Over 1 billion years ago, molten rock was dispersed throughout the world. In time, this molten rock would form together which in turn formed the continents in which we live today. This is true for Pikes Peak as well. Being the tallest mountain of the region (standing at 14,278 feet) there is much for tourists to be attracted too.…

Every one hundred jobs in agriculture supports twenty six jobs in other industries. Irrigation in Yuma makes Yuma huge in farming and producing crops, this means Yuma needs transportation, warehousing, real estate, banking, retailing, wholesale trade and also, health care, food and beverage services, retailing, and auto repair. From a small town to a huge competitor in agriculture, irrigation is a huge key for Yuma being in the top 0.1 percent among U.S. counties in vegetable and melon sales. Yuma would be turned into a major agricultural town and would eventually become a huge contributor to the U.S. and would make up our vibrant economy in Arizona. Without irrigation in Yuma, some other place would be the biggest leader in crop production and no one would have ever heard of Yuma, Arizona, and this town would have never been so…

The Great Smoky Mountains landform is mostly sedimentary rocks that were formed by the accumulation of sand, clay, silt, sand, gravel, and minor amounts of calcium carbonate in flat-lying layers. According to The Great Smoky Mountain’s website, about 545 million years ago the sediments were formed and large amounts of those sediments were washed down into lowland basins from adjacent highlands. The colliding between the edge of the North American tectonic plate and the African tectonic was a huge cause of the creation of The Great Smoky Mountain landform. It was discovered that incredibly long and active geologic events were found in the rocks of the smoky mountains. There was a specific…

The polar areas between 60 and 90° latitude receive less heat from solar radiation as the angle of the sun is at a much lower angle towards the ground. The day length varies considerably in this zone due to the changing positon of the Earth axis angle to the Sun. This means that in the summer, polar days occur. Vegetation is only possible for a couple of months of the year and even then it is very difficult. The conditions of this climatic zone are very difficult in which to live.…

Firstly, central Canada is an important region to keep as the sheer amount of immigrants living there are necessary for Canada to function as a whole. For example, about 7 million of the 11 million immigrants in Canada lives in the region of Central Canada. One reason they are a necessity can be the ability to reduce the ratio of working bodies to retired bodies. Currently in Canada, the baby boomer generation is starting to retire and for those retired people to receive their benefits, we (the future generation) might be taxed heavily just for those services to be provided for our parents and other elderly people. One solution is immigration.…

To this day, California has been in a drought. The governor, Jerry Brown is struggling to create policies to prevent people from using large amounts of water. He has made proposals to reduce the water use in California by building tunnels under the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta to increase the supply of water. One of the reasons California is in a drought is because of our history of dealing with the gold miners using hydraulic mining to mine gold, and damming the Tuolumne River to provide water for San Francisco. Although the use of of water has benefitted farmers and cities, it has not been in the best interest of the state because it has harmed the Native Americans and the environment.…
