The “Interpreter of Maladies” is a story of a family that goes on vacation. While on vacation they discover many things about themselves, as well as their relationship with others they come into contact with. There are many themes that are presented in this story in which are very important to the stories development. This paper discusses the communication barrier that the characters share together.
Communication is the main theme in the story “The Interpreter of Maladies” by Lahiri. Lahiri presents the communication barrier by showing how it has a tendency of breaking down between characters. This in turn, can cause hurtful consequences such as broken relationships. The difficulty in communication is first evident in the character of Mr. Kapasi. Kapasi, the inability to establish a clear line of communication is also evident in the characters of Mr. and Mrs. Das. Throughout the story, we find out that the only time that the couple talks to each other is when they are arguing. The couple have a failure to communicate when they are arguing in the beginning of the story about who should take their daughter to the restroom. This shows that they are unable to properly communicate with each other. The children learn from the way their parents fail to communicate and in turn do not find the need to listen to their parents when their parents speak to
