While imprisoned for his support of Robespierre during the French Revolution (#2) Jacques-Louis David began planning his next painting. After a visit from his estranged wife he began painting what would be called (#1) The Intervention of the Sabine Women. He completed the painting in 1799. 1 (Stanska) My interoperation is that his wife’s visit brought him a great sense of joy and hope. He wanted to portray that feeling of the power of love in his next work.
(#3) The story of the Sabine Women takes place in Rome at the start of the Roman Empire. Previously the Romans were lacking women. They raided the tiny village of Sabine and kidnapped their women. The painting portrays the start of the battle where the Sabine men launched a counter-attack on Rome seeking blood and the return of their women. 2 (Louvre)

I notice the children at the bottom. I see the children representing life and motherhood as if the Sabine Woman is protecting her children while stopping the battle. The woman in white is also used as a line of separation of the two battling sides. She is colored the brightest in the painting. I see her as being the light during a dark time in history. The artist also uses a difference shapes and colors in the dead space with the use of colder colors in the top right portion compared to the darker and warmer colors used in the foreground. The characters at the center of the painting have the clearest texture. (#5) The warriors in the background have a lower quality in contrast and brightness. This is to draw more attention to what is happening in foreground of the paining. The artist also uses nudity similar to how the Greeks used nudity in art as a celebration of the ‘perfect’ human
