First of all, the majority of the Democrats and Republicans in Washington believed that Iraq was developing chemical and biological weapons and weapons of mass destruction. This was threatening to the world, since Iraq has used chemical weapons before during the war with Iran. However, Iraq did not use weapons of mass destruction during the Gulf war. After the Gulf war, there was a truce that Iraq had to dispose weapons of mass destruction under the supervision of the United Nations (U.N.) and an inspection system was set up. However, by the mid-90`s Saddam Hussein delayed or even denied inspectors access to possible weapons-development sites they wanted to visit. Other reasons to attack Iraq were that Saddam Hussein was an enemy of the U.S., he started two aggressive wars in the region of Iraq, and Saddam brutally oppressed his own people. Moreover, after the terrorist attack on the U.S. on 9/11, Bush was wanted to invade Iraq to combat terrorism. In sum, the motives of the United States to invade Iraq were that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction, Saddam suppressed his people and because Iraq supported international terrorism, especially al –Qaeda. Therefore the U.S. wanted to take Saddam down and help the Iraqi people to establish a democracy there. He asked authorization of the U.N. and asked to justify this invasion.
