The Jungle Term Paper The Jungle is a book about the hardships of the working class, and the false thoughts about the United States. The book follows the story of the Lithuanian family, and how the harsh conditions, low pay, and corrupt people affect their life. Many of these problems still occur among the working class, and to a certain level to the minorities. Not only that, the suffering of each family member and the process of getting to the top is very similar to what many of the people nowadays go through. Jurgis Rudkus, Teta Elzbieta Lukoszaite, Marija Berczynskas, Dede Antanas Rudkus all represent the harsh conditions of the working class, and how they are related to modern day history. For example, Teta Elzbieta Lukoszaite insists on having a wedding feast for Jurgis and a proper funeral for her child even though they don't have money to afford it. Elzbieta is an old woman who likes to continue her tradition rather than assimilate with the Western country. She depicts the immigrant women who likes to stay home, take care of the children, and working as needed. When they are short of money she resorts to begging the neighbors rather than giving up her traditional values. This aspect is seen in many immigrant women today; the first or second generation practices the tradition and doesn't really assimilate with the Americans. This was the case for many of the women during the time of Marija Berczynskas. Marija was forced to work because her family was poor and unable to feed the others. With the low wages of the time and high food prices it was hard for many immigrant families to provide for their family with one source of income, many had to resort to multiple sources which included children. This issue is still faced by many people today, although not as severe, many low income families still have a hard time supporting each other because of low income. Similar to Marija, some women work because the family needs it and are even abused. Although children don't work today, it puts a greater load on the parents, which in turn forces them to hold multiple jobs and not be a home to take care of the
