Imagine being 16, on the open water in the middle of summer, by yourself, completely free. In the story “The Kayak” Teresa feels like the only way she can escape her parents and the rest of the world is kayaking. While Teresa is on the open water she realizes a storm is coming so she decides she should work her way home before she gets stuck. As she turns around she sees a windsurfer coming at her at full speed. He barely misses her and crashes into a rock. He doesn't know how to get home so Teresa decides to help him. They connect to each other by a rope and Teresa starts paddling home. With a few struggles on the way home, they finally make it but Teresa doesn't get out of the kayak. Plea bargaining is a commonly used prosecutorial method to dispose of a case without going to trial. A plea bargain or negotiated plea is an agreement between the defense and the prosecutor in which a defendant pleads guilty to a criminal charge and in exchange he expects to receive some form of consideration from the state. (Neubauer, 2002, p. 323) Most cases never make it to trial, more than 80 percent of criminal cases filed ended with the defendant entering a guilty plea. (Fagin, 2003, p. 61)…

You must have the strong will to “want” to accomplish whatever goal you set for yourself. For example, when I was playing the game of chicken and always lost in the beginning, this would be the obstacle that stood in front of me, but I overcame this by not saving any strokes to get back. I remember a time when I was saying, “You want to know how I did it? This is how I did it, Anton: I never saved anything for the swim back.” Another example of how I overcame my obstacles is obvious. My biggest obstacle that I faced was when the company Gattaca only allowed “pure breeds,” if you will, to be co-workers and be able to go up to space, which was my dream. I surpassed that rule by impersonating my good friend Jerome. A quote he said to me once was, “I got the better end of the deal. I only lent you my body - you lent me your dream.” Jerome was immobilized from waist down when he was hit by the bus, which let me impersonate him and fulfilling my dreams of going to space. All my hard work is finally paying off. My big goal that I have been longing to achieve is in sight. Not many people get to live my dream, but it took a lot of planning and thought for me to sneak my way into Gattaca. My next point will be my final thought about human…

The courtroom workgroup is made up of people in the criminal justice system such as judges and prosecutors. They decide what happens in every case that is presented in the system and use their discretion on whether to deny or accept a case. The way that cases are identified as serious depends on the evidence that is available. Other factors such as witnesses, prior record, and criminal activity is all taken into account. If the courtroom workgroup decides that there isn’t enough information for the case to go on they drop it because they see no use in wasting their time with it. Walker mentions that most of the cases like rape are what get dropped because of insufficient evidence and people tend to see it as the offender getting off the hook (2015, p. 66). It may be seen as an injustice because those cases don’t go through to have a trial, but too much work is put into cases that the best option is to just put all the effort in the ones that will get a conviction. Those other cases that are seen as more serious because of prior record and the type of crime committed usually have a high going rate. Some crimes like murder are known to have higher going rate because of how…

In anything that we would like to succeed I we must be determined. Determination is staying focused on a plan even though the path to its end may be difficult. When I was younger I was very determined to play sports, but my opportunities seemed limited. At my age I considered myself to be one of the best football players we had. Unfortunately, it was hard for me to actually showcase my talents, because sometimes I would miss or even have to walk to my practices or games.…

I am very competitive so I am not going to stop until I am satisfied with the outcome. One can find my level of determination in everything I do. Being determined is not always about completing something first or being the best at something. It is about making myself feel accomplished with the outcome. Whether it is in sports that I am competing in or making myself get up and go to a class. Every time that I get out of bed and drive to school, I am shaping myself into a stronger individual that will be more successful in the future. I make myself go to classes because I am thinking about my future. If I bite the bullet now and take on all the hard tasks that get in my way I can have a more enjoyable life later. I am basically following in the footsteps of my sister. She is training to become a physical therapist. Becoming a physical therapist is not an easy task. If it was easy, anyone would be able to do it. I am fortunate enough to see the things that she did not do that would have been beneficial to her. I am able to better myself so that when I am in the upper level education courses, I will not have to fret as much as she does. I can prepare myself for the worst by taking on the worst now rather than later. This can either be for the upper education that I will need to partake in the future or the career that I will need to establish later in life. Success in building a healthy family and a…
