The Kite Runner
Guilty or Not Guilty? “My hands are stained with Hassan’s blood; I pray God doesn’t let them get stained with the blood of his boy too.” (Hosseini, 2003, page 346) Amir, the main character, said this while his nephew was in the hospital because of a potentially fatal suicide attempt. Many people would say, because of this quote, that Amir is not worthy of forgiveness. This makes Amir, the main character in Khaled Hosseini’s novel The Kite Runner, not worthy of forgiveness. There are many examples of Amir being selfish in the novel which proves that he is not worthy of forgiveness. When Amir was a kid his half brother, Hassan, was raped by Assef. This event left Hassan scarred and caused him to stay distant from everyone. Amir couldn’t handle the guilt and asked Baba to find new servants but Baba refused. Ali and Hassan left anyways. This shows Amir is too caught up in himself to care for anyone else’s feelings, which proves that he is not worthy of forgiveness. Another example of Amir not being worthy of forgiveness is that he expects everyone to fight his battles for him. There are two strong examples of this in the novel; once when Hassan is getting beat up by Assef, and a second time when Assef was beating up Amir. Hassan took the beating from Assef so that he could keep the kite Amir wanted. Sohrab, Hassan’s son, saved Amir’s life while Assef was beating him up. SInce Amir is not capable of standing up for himself, he should not be worthy of forgiveness. The last big example of Amir’s selfishness is shown when Sohrab is in the hospital after his failed suicide attempt. The only thing Sohrab asked Amir for was to not be put back into an orphanage, and Amir told him he might have to do so. After Amir told Sohrab about the orphanage, he left him unsupervised and took a nap. When he woke up he found Sohrab clinging to life in the bathtub. While Sohrab was fighting for his life in the hospital Amir prayed that Sohrab’s “blood wouldn’t be on his hands.”

Amirs selfish actions although unforgivable are in ways not only his fault. When Amir “ran” from Hassans rape, it was not because he was just a “coward” Amir had been pushed away by his father and yearned for his affection so much that he thought, “Hassan was the price to pay.. to win Baba” and his affection, this is significant because it could be argued that if Amir had not had to win Babas affections the key scene of Hassans rape may have turned out differently and Amir may not have felt the guilt and need to commit his following selfish acts.…

Receiving redemption is a difficult task. Amir knew this more than anything else. Amir, as a young and ignorant individual, didn't know the severity of his actions until he was much older and much wiser. Amir carried those actions with him throughout his entire life. It wasn't until an old friend, Rahim Kahn, called Amir to remind him that, “…there is a way to be good again.” (Hosseini 2), that Amir realized something had to be done to make right a wrong that had been posed on Hassan years ago.. This simple statement presented by Rahim immediately became Amir’s driving factor. This statement convinced Amir to do something, to seek his own redemption, instead of hiding from the past as he had done for his for…

The most forgiving character in the novel is Hassan. Hassan is the type of person who is openhearted and is able to let go of the worst of situations. Many faulty events have happened during Hassan’s childhood but in the end of it all, he still found the strength to forgive. Two examples of his forgiveness are first seen with Amir, after the rape and frame incident, Hassan tries to reach out to Amir by sending him the letter. After writing “I am hopeful that one day I will hold one of your letters in my hands and read of your life in America” (229), Hassan demonstrates that he is willing to put the past in the past and try to re-kindle their friendship that had been broken for many years. Another example of Hassan’s forgiveness is with his mother Sanubar. After abandoning her only son, she takes the initiative to come back into Hassan’s life after all those years. Even though Hassan never really knew his mother and was so angry at her for leaving him motherless, he still lets her back into his life. Hassan forgives his mother Sanubar for not being there and not getting the chance to experience motherly love that should he should have gotten. Hassan’s good mentality and compassion about negativity allows the theme of forgiveness to play a major role in the…

We are constantly influenced by various things we encounter, these things even have the potential to change the way we view the world around us, none more so than texts like Khaled Hosseini's novel, The Kite Runner. The book is a retelling of an Afghani boy's life, which addresses the issues of friendship, coming of age, and the power of the past can have on somebody. The Author's way of addressing of these issues, has significantly shaped my own views, specifically how friendship can often be unequal, how coming of age can be based upon a specific event, and that the actions from the past can haunt you until the day you die. Through Hosseini's presentation of these issues and ideas, The Kite Runner has both changed and reinforced my opinions about friendship and how previous actions can haunt your present reality.…
