One day a year all the kids make themselves a kite to fly and fight with. They all fly their kites into the air and once everyone is up the competition begins. The goal is to use you string to cut other peoples and be the last kite flying. Now along with kite fighting there is this thing called kite running. When a kite is cut all the kids who did not fly a kite or are already out chase after the kites that are being cut. To get one of these kites is an honor and is hung up in the household of the kid who ran it. Amir and Hassan always worked as a team at the kite fighting competitions in the past and they would do so this year as well. Together they decided they wanted to win this year and they were dedicated to doing so. Eventually it was this Amir and Hassans kite and one other left in the sky. Sure enough their dedication paid off, they cut the last kite and won the competition. Hassan decided he wasn’t done yet though, he ran after the kite they cut, he wanted that kit for Amir, and he wanted it bad. When Hassan did not return for quite a while Amir went to search for him. Amir knew what he had to do, so he flew over to Kabul to see Rahim. It was then when Rahim informed him that Hassan and he had been brothers, both sons of Baba. Amir was very upset, not so much at the fact that Hassan had been his brother, but more that no one had ever told him. Rahim also told him on this day that Hassan and his wife had been murdered by the Taliban. The only thing left of Hassan in this world was his son, Sohrab. Rahim’s death wish was for Amir to go and find Sohrab and put him in an orphanage. When he went to find Sohrab he found out the head of the Taliban had him, so when he went to the head of the Taliban to get Sohrab he found a not so pleasant surprise. Assef was the head of the Taliban, which didn’t really surprise Amir. Assef wanted his revenge on Amir so he said they would fight for the kid and whoever wins gets to keep him. Amir accepted and Assef starting beating the tar out of him. Assef beat him so bad that if it weren’t for Sohrab he would have died. Sohrab shot Assef in the left eye and the brass ball he shot him with replaced his eyeball. He fell to the ground screaming and holding his eye, meanwhile Amir and Sohrab made a run for it.
