Kite Runner is an exquisite novel about a boy who is considered a coward. Its taken place in modern day San Francisco as well as in Afghanistan during Amir’s childhood, who was the main character and narrator. Amir had a fortunate upbringing due to the fact that his father was a highly respected elder of the Afghan society, privileging him with riches and a wealthy lifestyle. This was unlike his best friend, Hassan, who was his father’s servant’s son, being of a less and unfortunate social status. His father, Baba, always knew that he was a coward. He had said to Rahim Khan, his business associate (also Amir’s uncle), that “a boy who won’t stand up for himself becomes a man who can’t stand up to anything. (ch. 3)” Baba knew that his one’s son’s flaw was his cowardice, and this is what Amir lacked to gain his father’s complete approval. Unlike Amir, Hassan was the brave one-this led to Amir being jealous of Hassan’s courage. “I actually aspired to cowardice, because the alternative, the real reason I was running, was that Yassef was right: Nothing was free in this world. Maybe Hassan was the price I had to pay, the lamb I had to slay, to win Baba. (ch. 7)” His jealousy and lack in courage led to Hassan being raped by Yassef, which highlighted Amir as a coward who feared to stand up for anything. But Amir was tested majorly years after when asked to rescue Hassan’s son, Sohrab. This was his way to redemption from being a coward when it came to Hassan’s life, giving him a chance to help his best friend’s son. Little did he know that the person he’d have to face was the exact same person that he was too frightened to face as a child-Yassef.
