Redemption in The Kite Runner Based in Kabul, The Kite Runner leads us through the extensive journey of the main character Amir working towards fulfillment and redemption for his past sins. The journey starts during Amir’s childhood: Amir’s father, Baba was never accepting of Amir. The journey continues when Amir witnesses Hassan, his half brother be raped and does nothing to stop it because he yearns for his father’s affection. The betrayal Amir emitted was later fulfilled in the novel with redemption. Amir’s choices as a child make his desire for redemption prominent in the book. Amir’s passage to redemption ends as a result of Sohrab, Hassan’s son. Sohrab was the final key to Amir’s past wrongdoings. In the novel The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini the theme of redemption influences various character to character relationships: Baba and Amir, Hassan and Amir, and Amir and Sohrab. This theme impacts the structure of the novel by allowing Amir’s past actions to affect his present actions. The theme of redemption is first fully introduced within the relationship between Amir and Baba. As a child he yearns for Baba’s affection. Throughout the book, Amir was constantly working to rid himself of his past sins. The entire book is a journey towards redemption. The want for redemption stemmed from Amir’s childhood, specifically his controlling, powerful father. Amir was just never enough. The journey continues with Hassan, Amir’s half brother who he betrayed on the highest level. Amir’s biggest mistake in the novel was allowing Hassan to be raped. All his life following his biggest mistake, all he felt was guilt. His guilt became his motivation, with the help of Rahim Khan, and thanks to Sohrab, he became whole
