Alexander McCall Smith was born in Zimbabwe 1948. Smith’s first year as a student was in Botswana but then moved to Scotland and was educated at law school. Smith has been teaching at universities in several African countries, including Botswana, where he has lived for some time.

Mma Makutsi finished secretarial school with top grades, and she performs her job with an iron fist. Mma Ramotswe has a close friendship with Rra J.L.B Matekoni, who is working as a mechanic. Rra Matekoni has fallen in love with the detective, but Mma Ramotswe is pleased with her life as it is and rejects his declarations of love to her. Together, Mma Ramotswe, Mma Makutsi and Rra Matekoni will solve crimes and problems from the African daily life.
