The book, Where The Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls was made in 1961, then turned into a motion film movie in 1974. There were many similarities and differences between the movie and the book. Some things in the book didn't happen in the movie, and the movie moved a lot faster. The movie was more sad than the book though because it showed more detail when the dogs died. In my personal opinion, the book was way better.…
NEW YORK (CNN) -- They sat bloody and petrified -- the lights out, smoke engulfing the room and pain searing through their bodies. There was no escape from where they were in the South Tower, in pieces after being hit by United Airlines Flight 175 as far as they could tell.…
“Marigolds” written by Eugenia Collier is a story about a girl who realizes the end of her innocent childhood after a childish action. In The Scream by Edvard Munch, we see a man who seems scared and confused, the world around him seems undefined and confusing as well. In Kiseg’s painting Scared Girl, we see that she looks trapped and scared. All 3 of these pieces there is a common element: scared and confused. In “Marigolds”, the narrator, Lizabeth, is scared on page 319 where she says, “The fear unleashed by my father’s tears.” This shows that she was feeling fear from how upset her father was. Also, in The Scream, we see the fear in the face of the man in the painting, he’s screaming from the terror of something. There are similar themes…
“What was the evidence of her offense? Tom Robinson, a human being. She must put Tom Robinson away from her. Tom Robinson was her daily reminder of what she did. What did she do? She tempted a Negro.” (Lee 203) In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Tom Robinson, an innocent and nice black man was accused a raping a white girl named Mayella Ewell. Atticus Finch is Tom Robinson’s lawyer, and he has it all under control and is able to prove his point that Tom Robinson is not guilty. Tom Robinson is not guilty because the jury is inconsistant, there is no evidence of rape, and an important thing is that Tom Robinson can not use his left hand, which is one of the key things to this trial. Despite the fact that everybody thinks that Tom Robinson is guilty for the rape, he is not. Atticus Finch fully explains and shows that there is no way Tom is guilty. People automatically think that Tom Robinson is guilty because he is black, but that is not fair at all.…

And so we came to those days when summer was dead but autumn had not yet been born. It was Saturday noon, just a few days before the start of school. Daddy, Mama, Doodle, and I were seated at the dining room table, having lunch. Suddenly from out in the yard came a strange croaking noise. Doodle stopped eating. "What's that?" He slipped out into the yard, and looked up into the bleeding tree. "It's a big red bird!"…
'To Kill a Mockingbird', written by Harper Lee, depicts a tenacious sense of maturity that is perceptible throughout the novel. Maturity, that word has a different meaning for every individual. Maturity can be seen as an understanding that comes with experience rather than age though the two usually seem to go together but not always. Set in the 1930's in the deep south of America during the era of the Great Depression, Jem and Scout Finch learn the real life in Maycomb County as a result of certain events that force them to grow up.…
Have you ever walked into someone else's shoes? Have you ever token up for someone? In To Kill a Mockingbird has many times to where someone takes the role of someone else or puts there self in another person’s position and takes up for them. Scout is a person who does this a couple of times in this book. This book also shows the perceptions of other people from others. In this essay I will talk about scout putting herself into another person’s shoes or sticking up for another. In the begging of To Kill a Mockingbird scout steps into the shoes of Walter Cunningham. Miss Caroline offers Walter money for lunch because he says he forgot his lunch. Walter keeps shaking his head no that he won’t take the money, he then tells scout to tell her why. Scout starts off by saying “He is a Cunningham". Miss Caroline doesn’t understand but scout is thinking to herself that everyone knows that the Cunningham's are poor. She says it again that Walter is a Cunningham. The Cunningham's are a family of poor farmers and they never took anything they couldn’t pay back. In this case scout stood up for the Walter by standing up for him and telling Miss Caroline why he wouldn’t take the money.…
The "rigid and time honoured code" of society was that, while, white people could employ and even exploit African-Americans, there could be no personal relationship between African-Americans and whites and no recognition that African-Americans had the same reactions and feelings as white people. Further, there was an evil assumption "that all Blackslie, that all Blacks are basically immoral beings". They certainly did not have the benefit of then To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus' says "Mayella has merely broken a rigid and time honoured code of our society, a code so severe that whoever breaks it is hounded from our midst as unfit to live with..."…
Every morning the mother would rise early, open the shutters to let the warmth of the sunlight beam into their lovely little home. She would then reach for wood at the side of the table and start the fire in the stove that is in the middle of the room to prepare their daily breakfast of porridge and berries. As the big brass pot begins to boil she would spoon in the porridge grains. Once the mixture thickens, Mother would then sprinkle the berries into the mixture. Mother would then go outside to get the berries that are in a box near the door. On this particular day, she notices something strange.…
emphasizes the idea of being one with language, nature and the universe. The tactile imagery triggers a sense that the word ‘poppy’ is a key to unlocking Ovid’s real self as a result of his unusual sreaction to saying such an ordinary word whilst the visual imagery creates a feeling of reminiscent and discovery from his childhood as the word ‘flooding’ suggests the memories were once locked up in the back of Ovid’s mind. The olfactory imagery however, suggests that Ovid is…
What is a hero? When one thinks of a modern day hero one typically thinks of a character with extreme muscles who is constantly helping others. In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, a modern day hero is Atticus. Although he is not physically built, he exemplifies the qualities of a hero. During the Great Depression Scout, Jem, Atticus, and their housemaid Calpurnia, experience the extent of racism in Maycomb County. Tom Robinson is accused of raping Bob Ewell’s daughter and is defended by Atticus. Robinson is then convicted due to his skin color, regardless of his innocence. Throughout this court case Atticus actively supports Tom Robinson. Regardless of difficult circumstances, a hero exemplifies fairness, courage, and initiative. In all emotional settings a hero should attempt to be fair and just. Furthermore, a hero shows courage through the conflicts that he faces. Finally, a hero displays initiative when it is unexpected which is revealed through the use of irony.…

This came about when I first read Nathaniel Hawthorne’s short story “Feathertop”, a story about a witch who brings a scarecrow to life and tricks a young woman into marrying it. I also took inspiration from Ken Burns documentary, The Civil War, and other nuggets of the American Civil War lore. The rest of the story would go like this. The scarecrow would go to Boston and enlist as an officer in the Union army. He would fight first in the first Battle of Bull Run and then he would continue to fight. Along the way he meets several other soldiers and civilians and develop a different personality than Ichabod Jones. He would also come to face Thaddeus O’Hara, a confederate oculist. In the end Feathertop would have a final face off with O’Hara at…
