In this essay I will be discussing the representation of Africa in the movie called the last king of Scotland. This essay will show mention all the representations of Africa within the movie and it will show how the director Kevin MacDonald’s the director of The Last King of Scotland (2003) portrays the brutality in Africa. The image above shows the signifiers related to Africa. It is an image of a man standing in the center on of the image wearing soldier cloths carrying a gun. Africa is known for their tribal ritual dances and that is what is also happening in the image. The men dancing are half dressed with yellow pants and they are wearing beads on the upper body, they are wearing feathers on their heads. They are holding spears and shields. These are some of the signifiers related to Africa.
According to Hall Africans are known to be savages, cannibals, immoral and devil worshippers (Hall 1997:243). There is a scene where there is a traditional healer who is trying to help someone in the is village, traditional healers are known to heal and it is believed that ancestors from the spirit world speak through them (Ancestral wisdom 2013:[sp]). Figure 2 is an image with cows on the left side and an army of soldiers on the right side. Since Africa is known for its civil wars, the image is from a scene in the movie were the army is driving around to see if there are any rebels who want to take down Amin and also protecting him from any rebels. Amin get attacked by a rebel tribe and they don’t succeed in killing him, when they catch the people who tried to kill him, he tortures them and then kills them. The meaning that a view may draw from this image is that Africa is always fighting with each other and that there are not any developed places, there are no roads and the animals are just roaming
