The Last Leaf Analysis
I picked my own story for The American writer O. Henry

The Name of story is: The Last Leaf

a brief summary of the story:

The short story took place in New York City where two friends - Sue and Johnsy - live, work in art in a poor apartment, and publish their drawings in magazines, and thereby earning their living, and like any other artist, they hope to draw a masterpiece one day.

One day, Johnsy fell prey to pneumonia.

The doctor visited her and told her friend-Sue- that Johnsy could be cured of the disease if she has a real desire to heal.

Johnsy then decided to spend her time looking through the window to an ivy plant whose leaves are falling one by one and says in herself that she will die when the last paper falls.

The old artist,

A strong storm blows and Johnsy says the last leaf must have fallen.

When Su opened the window, Johnsy discovered that the last leaf has not fallen.

and then Her health status is starting to improve.

The old artist Behrman got pneumonia and is taken to hospital, and He died two days later.

Then Sue discovered that the last leaf still pending is a sketch painted by Behrman to give Johnsy a long life. The leaf, drawn by Behrman does something like magic by providing Johnsy with a desire to live.

My review about the story:

We must believe that the desire for life is a powerful force in fighting disease.

How wonderful the help Su had made for her friend, she was taking care of Jonsey with all her time and effort and always tried to implant life in her, The old artist Behrman, who painted a leaf on the wall to give hope to Jonse, does that with a lot of sacrifice ,where he painted during the storm, making his health deteriorate and die.

The final leaf he painted on the wall is the masterpiece he always hoped to paint, and actually he drew this masterpiece and went as he was saying.

It was already a masterpiece, a priceless humanist

I had seen a movie about this story before and I loved this film so I decided to re-read the story again and write about it.

One quote formatted using APA in-text citation style:

“They couldn't imagine where he had been on such a dreadful night. And then they found a lantern, still lighted, and a ladder that had been dragged from its place, and some scattered brushes, and a palette with green and yellow colours mixed on it, and - look out the window, dear, at the last ivy leaf on the wall. Didn't you wonder why it never fluttered or moved when the wind blew? Ah, darling, it's Behrman's masterpiece - he painted it there the night that the last leaf fell."(Henry, p.88,87)

One paraphrase formatted using APA in-text citation style:

Berman is an old man at the age of sixty. We can say that he likes the statue of Moses in the famous sculpture of Michelangelo.

He spent his life talking about a unique painting he would draw but he was really a failed artist who could speak and drink only, where he worked only as a model for young artists who do not have the money to pay for professional models. (O. Henry,2002)

In “To Paint a Water Lily,” by Ted Hughes, the speaker examines the complex aspects of nature by revealing the challenges he faces as an artist in capturing its real meaning. When he looks at the scene, he sees an exciting little world of constant movement and activity, hidden by the peaceful stillness of the water lilies that float at the surface of the pond. Ted knows that to paint the water lily and do it righteousness requires more than a simple description of the plant itself—he must also somehow capture its environment; the busy life that surrounds it. The power with which the speaker describes this incredible task and the appreciation he feels for the outstanding convolution of nature is expressed through the use of tone, language, imagery, diction and figurative language.…

When the final leaf is gone, she says, she will die too. When there is only one leaf left, it will not fall, even though there is a roaring storm outside. When the last leaf is found to have not fallen because it was a painting, Johnsy realizes an important point – that it is never a good idea to let influence your mindset to such an extent as to lose the will to live – essentially, suicide. After her change of heart, Johnsy says, “Something made that last leaf stay there to show me how wicked I was. It is a sin to want to die” (Henry). In a world where suicides take place every day, it is valuable to hear a lesson that teaches to keep a hold of your grip on…

Peter Malion was an underappreciated portrait artist and bachelor who lived in Queens, New York. He never was famous for his works, even though was good at what he loved, and had a natural talent for art. When he wasn’t at work, he devoted his time at home to a project of his own—a portrait of a young woman. He spent hours of time putting an intricate design in places he saw fit such as her posture, cheekbones, and neckline. He had never been emotionally connected to any of his works, but when he painted his favorite portrait he always said: “One day, you will be complete, and you will be perfect.” After two months of dedicated labor toward the figure, He had finished all of his work which he thought to have reached perfection. He admired…

The true beauty of the water lily is that despite the chaos surrounding it, it rests unmoved and “still as a painting” on the pond’s surface. The speaker believes that the artist must realize this before he can adequately paint the lily. The artist must take in the environment, the good and the bad, before understanding how truly magnificent the still water lily is.…
