I agree with Bilger because people have been spending nineteen billion dollars on veterinary care for their pets. The Leverings spent more than half of their annual income on a surgery for their cat, Lady. Taberia’s owner is keeping her in the intensive care unit trying to save her life although the owner is told that they cannot save her life, but the owner keeps her there still spending money on a lost cause.…
Alley Cat Allies or the ACA is a charity organization that is committed to helping many varieties of mousers (Allies 4). Felines ranging from inside pets to feral tomcats outside. To help these cats, they work together with multiple animal shelters across the country as well as organizing the Feral Friends Network. According to the Charity Navigator, a site that grades charities based upon their financials and their trustworthiness, graded ACA a four out of five stars (Navigator). Alley Cat Allies is devoted to aiding each and every feline that is deprived.…
"No pestilence had ever been so fatal, or so hideous. Blood was its avatar and its seal- the redness and the horror of blood" (1). Edgar Allan Poe was a master of the macabre; his very stories injecting fear into the hearts of his readers. Poe's life was filled with tragedy, as several of the important women in his life, including his wife and daughter died at a young age. He utilized poems and books to express that tragedy. The short stories, "The Black Cat," and, "The Masque of the Red Death," both written by Poe, enhance the theme of fear. "The Black Cat," was about a narrator who had gone crazy and was so overcome by guilt that he went to extreme measures including…
Purdue University states that “The Human-Animal bond is the dynamic relationship between people and animals in that each influences the psychological or physiological state of the other” (“Center”). The Human-Animal bond is essential to the well-being of society. Animals can affect people in many different ways, specifically by providing companionship. This bond has existed for thousands of years, though people’s relationship with animals is much different today than it was in the past. The main reason that the relationship has changed is the concept of owning pets, which is relatively new (Reinisch). The concept of pet ownership has changed the way people see animals because instead of thinking of animals as…
Have you ever wondered why we own pets? According to Freud, animals are unaffected by the corruption and suffering caused by society, and, because of this, are desirable companions for humans. Freud hints towards the idea that animal’s companionship helps us relieve stress, gives us comforting attention, and also gives us something to care for, thus leading us to feel unconditional love. In my essay, I will first introduce the common ideas regarding why we own animals and the benefits of having them. Then I will discuss Freud’s analysis of pets through Civilization and Its Discontents and also through his own experiences with his dogs. Lastly, I will explain the effects of pets on human mental health, and conclude with the discussion of animal…

Why do people spend so much money on their animal? In Burkhard Bilgers “The Last Meow” people are spend thousands of dollars on their cat. Many people spend money like that on their animals. People spend that money on special food, toys, and most expensively veterinary care. Many people argue all the money spent on animals can go toward more important things like human health care and technological advancements. I argue that people can spend money on their animals if they wish. Besides, it is their money that they are spending, they love their animals, and animals have the right to live a nice life to.…
In May 2013, Edward Snowden, a CIA and NSA employee, risked his career and freedom to do something he felt was right; let the world know that the United States had programs such as the interception of telephone metadata, PRISM, XKeyscore, and Tempora internet surveillance programs. This was called the most significant leak in US history by some and sparked up the discussion about the balance between national security and civil liberties. The country needs to strike a balance between national security and civil liberties by sacrificing some of one to give way for more of the other.…

In el salvador there are more stray dogs than people in certain places and its a house rule that you dont feed or pet them no matter the reason or how scrawny or near death they may be. My grandmother the one who made this rule, was the first to break it. My grandmother was born in bloomington indiana into an alcholic family both my great grandmother and grandfather were alcholics for most of their lives and so are most of of their children now, up until 2012 my grandmother was an alcholic and for most of my child hood I dont have good memories of her but while I was in el salvador the grandmothe I had always hoped for returned. When I was little and my mother left to adopt my siblings in ukraine my grandmother stayed with us for months at a time and I do not remember these times fondly my grandmother was still a drunk and extremly abusive this was 7 years ago and after this happened I didnt see my frandmother for many years almost 3 or 4. until my grandmother stopped drinking but even then it still wasnt like what I saw when my granparents retired to el salvador. For the first time in my life my grandmother was kind and caring to the best of her ability which is astonishing considering shes bi polar and legally crazy, its not a short stretch to say that for the first time I saw her as a human being and not the demented being she once was. This changed me but it wasnt nearly as much as when she had me feed a starving puppy one day, I didnt know when I fed this dog that hed eventually become “my dog “ but it felt good to try and help him. I learned the back story to this dog a few hours after he left, it turns out his former “owners” kept him tied to a tree 24/7 and didnt feed him so that he…
But they usually try the “cheap” route which is only the cheaper choice at the moment. Humans are fine to show love and affection, but pets are even better. The only problem is, pets show a tremendous affection, and in the article “Why A Man’s Best Friend Is A Man’s Best Friend” it says,“Children often turn to their pet for comfort if a friend or a family member dies or leaves the family. Grieving adults who did not have a close source of human support were also found to have less depression if they had a pet”(Drs. Foster & Smith Educational Staff). Dogs know exactly how their human is feeling 99% of the time and if they do not know, they are always trying to figure it out. In “Huffington’s Post” they said, “Dogs are very attuned to humans' moods, which makes them a good gauge of what we're feeling. They're "an emotional barometer. Dogs have been domesticated for about 12,000 years," he says. "One of the things that research has shown is dogs have learned over these years, perhaps better than any other being, how to read our nonverbal behavior." (Klein,…
So far we've been staring at the situation from a Human POV, but animals are also living creatures; with needs that have to be taken care of by us, the highest intellectual being. It has been proven that animals have emotions, not expressed as our own, but they can be happy, sad, angry, hungry, hurt. It is unfair and an abuse that humans are so self centered focusing only in themselves, and not in the other third of living creatures. Animals should be loved and cherished, especially dogs and cats, as they can bring immense joy to any family. They can become your next Netflix Pal, or your Running Coach, or even your Cuddle Buddy when you're having a rough…
Last but not least is the reason on how this situation can help the community. Many shelters are overpopulated with pets. An article by”hhhstopeka” states “ Adopting from a shelter helps weaken the pet overpopulation cycle. Each year 8 to 12 million dogs, cats, puppies and kittens are euthanized because there are simply not enough homes for them.” Basically, they are saying that every shelter is overpopulated with these pets. So when you adopt a pet from the shelter you’re helping by breaking the overpopulation shelter. So that means you’re helping your community. Also when you adopt a pet you’re giving another pet a chance and space to survive in the shelter. That’s why I think that adopting a pet is better than buying one. Buying a pet…
My life as a dog is very hard that every day I fear of being abused because I know my life is under risk and that losing my life is very possible. There are a lot of people out there that don’t like me because of who I am and how I look like, every day I see how other people just passes by me hoping that they would pet me or that they would give me food but instead they scare me away because to them I’m just a street animal.Every day I go around searching for food,…
