Freya. Tall and blonde, she wore a cloak made of falcon feathers, just like the Norse goddess she was named for. But unlike the goddess, she was a circus performer. Freya was a trapeze artist who “flew” high above the crowds.
No one knew where Freya was from or how she came to be a trapeze artist, but everyone knew she was very smart, and could not be tricked. While many people desired Freya, Freya was more than desired by one; she was coveted - by the big, ugly troll who lived under the Fremont Bridge in Seattle, but not because she was beautiful, but because she wore the cloak.
The troll was ugly, so ugly that one glance was enough to turn any living thing into stone. All the …show more content…
Once under the bridge, and before his eyes could even adjust to the dark, the troll snatched him away and gobbled him up!
The troll knew his plan was working, so he started calling for the trapeze!
“Freya, beautiful Freya! We want to see Freya!”
But when the Ringmaster didn’t return, Freya knew it was a trap.
She called out, “My what a wonderful crowd! Are you ready to see the magnificent Freya, artist of air!?”
She leaned over the bridge rail just as the troll replied with his best impression of a crowd, “Yes! Yes! We want Freya!”
That was when she smelled his breath. A troll’s breath is very distinctive. It smells of garlic and sewage, but it is also masked with lavender and mint.
That was when she knew what must be done. Freya called to the
Circus Cook, (you didn’t know circus’ had cooks? If you think an army marches on its stomach, you have never seen a real circus!
All the performers and all their animals must eat every day, too!). “Bring me all your bags of ice!”
“Ice? What for? Did you strain a muscle?”
“No,” she said, “I’m adding a new stunt to my routine!” The she yelled over the bridge rail to the crowd, “This new stunt …show more content…
And I will carry with me a special bag of magic!” When the cook returned with the ice, she poured the ice cubes into a leather satchel. And she called over the rail, “This satchel will make it seem as if time is frozen!”
Then, being the wise artist she was, she wrapped the satchel in her cloak and threw it over the rail!
The Fremont Troll snatched the parcel out of the air! And before anyone could even blink, he gobbled it down!
Then he realized he’d been tricked! He felt the ice in his throat as he began to turn to stone. Trolls may live where it is cold, damp, and dank, but they must never eat anything that is cold, for it slows them and they will starve.
But for a troll to eat ice! Just as his hideous looks will cause living things to turn to stone, if a troll eats ice or snow he will turn to stone! Freya new this because she was more than just a circus performer, she was in fact the goddess herself!
The troll turned to stone even as he clutched for the warmth of a Volkswagon!
Today, anyone can safely approach the Fremont Troll, for he is stone. The Volkswagon is still in his grip, but no living things need have fear of ever being turned to stone, and the bridge
