The Legend of the Ouija Board

“Girls, girls, settle down,” said a freckled, red head. “Lets do something fun”. “Like what?” asked a girl starring at the red with a curious look. “Who knows any scary stories?” asked the red head, while another girl got up to turn off the lights in the room. The girls gathered around in a circle on the floor while some laid on the bed. They began looking at each other to see who would start. “Well, I know a story but I have to warn you guys, it’s a true story,” said the red. “This happened exactly two years ago in this same college, in this same room”. The room got quiet, the only thing you could hear is the thumping of the girls hearts. “Here is how it goes….” Two summers ago a group of friends; Vyra, Christy, Monique, Maria, and Maritza were looking for a place to have a party. Vyra, an inspiring dancer wanted to become famous and was best friends with Monique since they were in second grade. Monique was always a big flirt; she was the type that needed to be with a boy all the time. Maria had always been quiet but adventurous and curious. Christy was the rebellious and always mean to Monique, but she still loved her, in her on little way. Then there was Maritza the perfect one who had her high school sweetheart, but always had drama. The girls were all different but they loved each other. They were known as the Fab Five. They decided to have a party in front of the college where there was an abandoned house. This house had many legends. The most well known was about a woman who loved to play with the Ouija board. They say the woman who lived there went crazy and killed her family and slit her wrists in a tub full of water. These girls were just typical college girls just looking to have some fun. Flyers were passed around the campus, but the girls had their doubts. They knew that everyone at the school knew the stories of the house. They were scared to even pass by the house and had to go around. The

One night, they assumed they must have left the television set turned on. It sounded as if there was a party going on downstairs – voices, laughter, and the ‘clink’ of Champaign glasses. Heading downstairs to turn off the television, it went to dead silence. The TV was off, lights off, there was no one in sight.…

The year was 1953. It was a cool, crisp twenty-ninth of October. Usually, after their chores and homework were done, Kathy, 8, and her brother Jonathan, 15, along with their friend May, 11, and her cousin Adam, 13, all went to Joe’s Arcade, the local hangout of Leaport, North Carolina. Instead, they all decided to meet at the end of their dead end street, Farrow Avenue, and go for a walk through the woods. They were all bored since the arcade was too crowded and supper wasn’t ready yet. Their town was a small town, so there wasn’t any other places to go besides the woods. Plus, the old, burned O’Leary house was out there.…

It all began on January 20, 2013 when two girls, Abigail Williams and Elizabeth Parris, started to display strange behaviors. They began to have fits described as "beyond the power of Epileptic Fits or natural disease to effect" by John Hale, minister in nearby Beverly (Hale). Such behaviors included seizures, uncontrollable screaming and contorting of their bodies. Several other girls began to experience the weird behavior and the town became very concerned. It did seem strange for all of these people to keep having the same sort of strange behaviors. The physicians called in to examine the girls could find no natural cause of the disturbing behavior (eyewitnesshistory). It seemed that the town was not satisfied with the explanation so they had to come up with some sort of reasoning for the behaviors. Abigail and Elizabeth had come forward and told the people of the town that it was the fault of three women who had afflicted them. Their names were Sarah Good, Sarah Osborne and Tituba. These women would be deemed the cause of the un- natural behaviors.…

So what exactly happened? According to the authors, what was supposed to be an innocent “tradition of the powder puff football game” arranged by the senior girls for the junior girls, turned to an out of control game of humiliation and revenge. Girls were being pushed and kicked, splattered with paint and human feces. Later in the text we find out that, pig parts which were supplied by one of the parents were thrown at the poor girls. Someone put bucket over one girl’s head and hid it with a baseball bat. Parents of one girl, who lost consciousness during that “game,” testified later that “the victims were threatened with more violence if they left the field.” After the beatings and humiliations ended, five girls were sent to the hospital, one with a broken ankle, and another with a concussion so serious it caused memory loss, another to receive 10 stitches in her scalp. Every rule and principle of that game was violated, and per Mike Green, Northbrook Police deputy chief “many of the students could face criminal charges.” Not everyone; however, was part of the vicious game. The tape of that horrible incident, that was released and examined by the school officials, and later used by lawyers including Rollin Suskin, who represented several of the victims, also…
