While reading this threat letter in 1868 sent by a KKK member, the reader will begin to understand the level of racism that occurred during these time. As this source is a primary source it will corroborate my other sources whilst giving me a view to argue about within my essay; that the KKK used intimation and threat letters to fight against the Civil Rights Movement, thus, my overall question can be answer too. Even though I was not able to find who sent the letter due to the writer poising as dead confederate solider the perspective of source will still be that of a white male who was clearly in the KKK and believed in their beliefs and ideas.     Through research and evidence, it is clear that the perspective of the Klan has changed over time. Starting in Reconstruction in 1861, the Klan was portrayed as a benevolent society, working as law-enforcers to help maintain a distinct social order between Southern whites and newly freed African American slaves. Completely void of violence, this perspective portrayed the Klan as a positive, well-rounded organization. As history continued, the Klan’s violence was no longer being ignored, nor was it being seen as an effort to maintain societal order. The Klan’s aggressive and violent actions were now being acknowledged as racially motivated. These actions by the Klan were then used in efforts towards building a more politically affiliated organization. There was a third and final perspective. Much like the first, this perspective was void of all violence. This Klan was established as a result of a struggling planter class, begging for control. This particular Klan answered to the wants and desires of the planter’s class. As a result, the Klan was never seen as an over-arching obstacle for newly freed slaves and their new lives.     While many freed slaves found homes, land, and were ultimately free, they still faced tension, abuse, and terrorism from those who had formerly enslaved them. In “The Late Convention of Colored Men” published by the New York Times, a group of freedmen addressed the issue of being free yet not having independence, asking for protection from the Union, declaring that in the South, “loyalty is only ‘lip deep’” (New York Times, 445). Many Southerners felt that despite freed slaves being free, they were not the supreme race as were the white Americans. Thus, a group called the Ku Klux Klan arose in an effort to smother the ember of hope for the freedmen. The personal account of Harriet Postle tells of some of the terrors ensued by the Ku Klux Klan where the group, “ran the child back against the wall, and ground a piece of skin off as big as my hand” (Postle, 455). The Ku Klux Klan wanted to shut down freedmen and their supporters, and did so by hurting, scarring, and even killing.     Hooded Americanism: The First Century of the Ku Klux Klan: 1865 to the Present by David Chalmers records the history of the Ku Klux Klan quite bluntly, all the way from its creation following the civil war, to the early 1960’s. The author starts the book quite strongly by discussing in detail many acts of violence and displays of hatred throughout the United States. He makes a point to show that the Klan rode robustly throughout all of the country, not just in the southern states. The first several chapters of the book focus on the Klan’s creation in 1865. He goes on to discuss the attitude of many Americans following the United State’s Civil War and how the war shaped a new nation. The bulk of the book is used to go through many of the states, and express the Klan’s political influence on both the local and state governments. The author starts with Texas and Oklahoma, and goes through the history of the Klan geographically, finishing with New Jersey and Washington. The author stresses that the KKK did not just commit acts of violence towards minorities, but also carried political power. He continues to discuss the impact of the Klan on Civil Rights movements in the 1960’s, and various other important political controversies between the 1920’s and 1970’s. Towards the middle of the book, David M. Chalmers focuses on portraying the feelings of governments and state legislatures, as well as normal citizens towards the Klan. To do this more effectively, the author uses excerpts and quotes from editorials and newspapers, along with several dozen pictures. The conclusion of the book was used mainly as an overview of all of the major incidents and deaths involving the Klan, and how their persistence has allowed them to still exist today despite a lack of resources and support.…

    In the novel Maus II by Art Spiegelman you hear first hand from a survivor of Auschwitz the experiences of the holocaust and the horrific consequences of racism. Race is something that has developed over time and is constantly changing. Race is something that is seen differently by different people. “There is a continuous temptation to think of race as an essence, as something fixed, concrete, and objective. And there is also an opposite temptation: to imagine race as a mere illusion” (Michael Omi and Howard Winant, Racial Identity 183). Race can be seen as something concrete or as something changing. “The effort must be made to understand race as an unstable and “decentered” complex of social meaning constantly being transformed by political struggles” (Michael Omi and Howard Winant, Racial Identity 183). Race hasn’t been and will never be something that is set in stone and will never change. As society progresses and changes over time, so will the definition and make up of race and racism. “We should think of race as an element of social structure rather than as an irregularity within it, we should see race as a dimension of human representation rather than an illusion” (Michael Omi and Howard Winant, Racial Identity 184).     The first topic that is going to be addressed is stereotypes and dating. I am more familiar with this topic then the other two topics because I was the once who did the research for our group presentation about this. I came across numerous articles that were very eye opening to me. The first article I will talk about is called, "Is Love Becoming Color Blind?". I really enjoyed reading through this article because it had personal examples from three different interracial couples. The first couple was Kristina Adamski and John Phillips, who were both in their early thirties. In the article it stated that being an interracial couple has been less of a challenge because the two communicate their feelings, and they have a large supportive network of family and friends. Kristina also said, "The key is to have a diverse circle of friends and people who are open-minded." I think that statement from Kristina is very true and if everyone can keep that in mind then we could easily grow not just as people, but also as a country. In that very same article it also talked about blacks and whites, and how many people who are under the age of 30 who cross the color line without giving a second thought to race. That statement right there is a huge statement when talking about the positives to a color blind society. When you can look at someone who you are attracted to for their personality and not the color or their skin, that shows a lot about our country and how we are changing for the better. In that same article, another couple who spoke very wise words were 32 year old Paquita and her 34 year old husband Craig Morgan. This interracial married couple has two beautiful biracial children. They live in Atlanta Georgia where race is still an issue, but Paquita did state that "Race is quickly becoming more and more of a non-issue."
