The Life and Impact of Guglielmo Marconi Guglielmo Marconi was born on April 25, 1874 in Bologna, Italy. Marconi had one brother and was the son of Giuseppe Marconi and Annie Jameson. He was born into a wealthy family and was privately educated in the Italian cities of Bologna, Florence, and Leghorn. He was fascinated with the work of a well known scientist, Heinrich Hertz, and his discoveries on radio waves. In 1895, at one of his father’s estates, Marconi succeeded in sending radio signals across the estate(about 1 mile). Marconi’s father realized his father had made a significant discovery and Guglielmo went to England in 1896 to publicize. (Saari) Marconi’s system performed successfully

A radio wave is a type of electromagnetic wave. Radio waves have the longest wavelength(distance between successive crests of a wave) out of all of the types of electromagnetic waves known. Other properties of electromagnetic waves that are significant to Marconi’s discovery is that they can travel through empty space and travel at the speed of light. He combined this knowledge of radio waves and electromagnetic waves to create his wireless radio.(Radio Waves) Marconi built his first radio with, of course, a transmitter and a receiver. Influenced by Hertz’s experiments, Marconi created an electrical circuit in which radio waves were produced. He used a coherer in the receiver to pick up radio signals and later added wire antennas to improve it. A coherer is a glass tube with loosely packed metal particles inside of it used to pick up radio signals. These were the basics of the radio he first used to send radio signals across a long distance.(Saari) Marconi’s addition of the wire antennas was very significant and proved to be a necessity for the development of the radio. When waves reach an antenna, electric charges move up and down it. The radio detects the motion of the electric charges and therefore, detects the radio wave.(Radio Frequency)Radios convert the radio waves into vibrations. The vibrations turn into sound waves which are the sounds that are possible to hear. Also,

The radio waves used in radar help to decide the range, angle, or speed of objects. Radio waves have the longest wavelength, smallest frequency, and the least energy of all electromagnetic waves. These waves are a type of electromagnetic radiation, which additionally include microwaves, infrared radiation, x-rays, and gamma rays. Other important uses of radio waves are for television, cellphones, and…

A Doppler radar is an important tool used to measure the velocity and direction of a moving object. The Radar actually has transmitters that produce and release electromagnetic waves in the form of microwaves or radio waves. These waves are sent out and when they reach something they reflect or bounce back to the source or transmitter. It is noticed that when the waves are reflected back they are much weaker but the machines are able to amplify them to get an accurate reading from them. This process determines and measures the distance of the object its reading.…

Science and technology began to grow. Appliances that we take granted for today were barely being invented. Appliances such as the toaster, refridgerator, televison, vaccuum, and many more. Scientists and inventors were putting these appliances together. Imagine living without television or a vacuum. In 1927, there was a new Radio Control Bill that was sighned. Radio stations were beginning to spring up faster than they could speak. With several conflicting and overlapping vibrations, the radio bill stated each radio station will have their own wave-length determining on their location.…

Radios were used throughout the war but were impractical as they were heavy, fragile and expensive. At the time there were not very many people who were trained to use them as complicated codes had to be used. It was a very slow process because of the coding process and transmissions used which were also vulnerable to interception from the enemy, this could be a crucial disadvantage, for instance in the Battle of Tannenberg the Germans picked up on orders sent by the Russians through radio…
