The Little Foxes Analysis
“Gilded Decay”
The Little Foxes is set in the deep south, in the spring of 1900. This setting is historically at the cusp of what is referred to as the Gilded Age. The “Gilded Age” is considered to be the decades between 1870 and 1900 and is a term coined by Mark Twain. It was used to describe a period with many social problems that were masked by the rise of new money. Greed, scandal, and corrupt policies ran rampant during this time; however, as we look back, this was also a point in history where we grew economically and began to rise industrially.

In The Little Foxes we see this same concept displayed throughout the show. The Hubbard and Gibbons families are living in splendor. They are among the highest social class in the south, however

The title for Lillian Hellman’s play The Little Foxes came from the Song of Solomon 2.15. The quote says, “Take us the foxes, the little foxes that spoil the vines, for our vines have tender grapes.” This quote applies very well to the play. One possible reading is the foxes are the Hubbard siblings, and the grapes are wealth; the vines could be considered to be anyone that the Hubbards intend to use in order to get the wealth they desire.…

At first the purpose of the passage “Owls” by Mary Oliver is difficult to pinpoint. This is because Oliver begins with describing the penetrating fear of a “terrible” (33) great horned owl, and suddenly develops into a section discussing a desultory and trivial field of flowers. The mystifying comparison between the daunting fear of nature and its impeccable beauty is in fact Oliver’s purpose.…

The lord’s fox hunt and the bedroom scene on the third day suggests a parallel relationship between the lady’s attempt to capture Gawain in the bedroom and the lord’s attempt to capture his prey in the woods. The fox is cunning and fast and is not easily caught, “He springs back with a start, then twists and turns and flees. With heavy, heaving heart he tracks towards the trees.” (Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, pg. 763, line 1715-1718) This compares to Gawain as he is not easily caught by the lady of the house and her game of seduction, “She wore nothing on her face; her neck was naked, and her shoulders were bare to both back and breast.” (Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, pg. 764, line 1740-1741) The fox also gives the hounds a run for…

The next lower class are the whites who do not work and are extremely poor such as the Ewells. They neglect their personal hygiene and are rude to all the other classes. Finally, below all the other social classes, are the black families. Even though some of the blacks may have more money than a class above them, their race automatically puts them at the bottom of the social hierarchy. In Maycomb county, this social structure dictates life in the town, and all the people live according to it.…

Mark Twain had a phrase that was used to describe Gilded Age. This phrase was used to describe something that looks great on the outside but ugly and rotten in the inside. The corruption of the government, which made the Progressives want to fix the politics, business, and society. Politics would increase in democracy, involve citizens more directly, and improve efficiency. In business, the Progressives wanted to regulate big businesses and protect the consumers. They desired to make society more comfortable and safe environment. “Men and women worked in the midst of a sickening stench, which caused visitors to hasten by gasping.” (42) The rise of the Progressive movement tried to fix these harsh working conditions by making reforms. These reforms were to end corruption and to make the state government more direct accountable to the people. “Perhaps it was the smoked sausage he had eaten that morning – which may have been made out of some of the tubercular pork that was condemned as unfit for export.” (132) These factories knew about the meat not being good for Americans to be eating but just wanted to make money for the big…

For this assignment I observed two families, one was an upper middle classed family that I encountered in Target. I also observed a seemingly lower middle classed family I encountered them in a local grocery store. Both these families were white they also had many similarities as well as differences the differences they had were like night and day. Going into this assignment I thought that all middle classed families were like the ones that are portrayed on television the snobby, privileged, and stiff people who didn’t care about anyone but themselves, I chose an upper middle classed family and a lower middle classed family just to compare how they acted with their family and how they interacted with others in the stores, or wherever they are outside of the home.…

Berlin’s writing separates people into two different categories: the hedgehogs and the foxes. He states that the foxes are more versatile and knowledgeable, while hedgehogs have a single, central idea that controls their view on everything. Foxes are those who are willing to take different routes of learning in their life. In other words, Hedgehogs are a single minded, tunnel vision type of people, and foxes are more of the vast and scattered type of people.…

Social class is fundamentally determined by how much wealth you have. Income, education and gender are three major factors that I would consider to determine my family’s social class position. Concisely speaking, I came from a single-parent family which I only live with my mother. My mother is the only person who is officially employed in my family. Her occupation is a salesperson at a beauty centre with unstable income. One other important financial income of our family will be the alimony given from my father who no longer lives with us. Our household income per month is about $10,000. According to the 2006 Population By-census, the median monthly domestic household income (at current prices) was $ 17,250. Although there are only two people in my family, our monthly income is nearly 40% below the median figure in 2006. Individually, my mother does not receive stable income so her monthly income tends to be lower than the median monthly income of an employed individual of $ 10,000. In conclusion, my family’s income is comparably low; especially the data was collected in 2006 which inflation has already been excluded.…

I grew up in the small town of Plymouth, Wisconsin, with my parents and my little brother. We were a middle class family during my childhood days but declined to that of a working class family as I grew into my teenage years, according to my mom. The shift in our social class was due to 3 major events which I have pinpointed as: my dad being laid off from his job for several months, my mom’s business declining, and the time when the economy tanked around 7-8 years ago (which is what lead to the first 2 events). My mom said that these days we could probably technically be referred to as lower middle class, but we’re considered working class because my parent’s don’t have white collared jobs. I realize that as a child and even a teenager I never…
