Today, the Mirabal Sisters are honored and recognized as heroines in the Dominican Republic and in parts of the world. They are symbols of courage, love, and sacrifice. The Mirabal sisters were known for their courageous acts. Their names were Patria, Minerva, Maria Teresa, and Dede. The eldest three Patria, Minerva, and Maria Teresa were the ones who were involved in the protest. And were also the ones who ended up getting killed. Rumors say that a cab driver came to their home was hired by Trujillo who was the dictator of the Dominican Republic and asked if they needed a ride and they said yes and ended up at the bottom of a cliff and was found a couples hours later. Before all of those things happened the Mirabal sisters lives weren't so bad. It all started when they…
Dictator Rafael Trujillo ruled the Dominican Republic for over 30 years. He made his way to the top by destroying anyone that got in his way. This abuse of power continued throughout his reign as dictator. In the novel In the Time of Butterflies, Julia Alvarez gives numerous examples that express how Dictator Trujillo abused his power. Trujillo took away women’s rights , took away prisoner’s rights, and took away freedom of speech in all the citizens of the D.R. This evidence proves that Trujillo was a bad man and abused his position of authority.…
He got rid of people who went against him.then 6 months later he was killed. She was then described as a hero for their country. She was killed for believing in what she thought was right. She was like any other person stood up for what was right and believed in doing right not wrong. She went against trujillo cause she knew what he done and she didn’t like it. So when she slapped him it just made him mad. Trujillo put her dad in jail and he was beaten and wasn’t gave food. Then when he got out of jail he looked sick. So the family spent as much time as they could with him. Then out of no wear he had a heart attack and died. Maria teresa was so upset with trujillo. So she went against him even more and started looking up to fidel castro. Then castro turned out like trujillo and killed even more people. I think she was good for standing up for what she thought was right. She and her family stood up for everything they thought was right and i think they were not wrong for standing up for them self. Maria teresa was a brave person and caring. She took care of her dad’s other family when he couldn’t. Even when she found out and she was mad at him she forgave him. She was a great person and was a…

On the surface, Patria is portrayed as the most mundane of the Mirabal sisters because she is very religious and family-oriented character. However, Alvarez uses these characteristics and emphasizes on the events that led up to her loss of faith in order to shape her motivations for joining the revolution. In the beginning of the novel, Patria had no interest in being part of the revolution. However, her views change when surprise invasion when she was on a religious retreat. During the explosions, Patria witnesses a traumatic event when she looks out the window and witnesses the death of a young boy. She relates to this boy as if he were her own son and the terrible scene had a profound impact on her. After this traumatic event, Patria began to doubt God’s ability to protect her and her family. In her narration, she says, “I'm not going to sit back and watch my babies die, Lord, even if that's what You in Your great wisdom decide” (Alvarez 162). This event had a compelling effect on this character in two aspects. In one aspect, since Alvarez emphasized on Patria loss of faith, she was able to to transform the character, Patria from an ordinary, religious woman into a strong member of the revolution. In another aspect, by highlighting this traumatic event in Patria’s life, Alvarez was able to create depth in…

The novel, In the Time of the Butterflies, retells the story of 4 sisters who fought in a revolution against the dreaded regime of Trujillo in the Dominican Republic. The Mirabal sisters, Maria Teresa, Dedé, Minerva and Patria all have different insights and perspectives on what they think freedom actually is. The novel is written in first and third person and Maria Teresa’s contributions to the novel are written in the first person; entries taken from her diary. Maria Teresa’s first chapter in the novel depicts her as naive and materialistic. Maria Teresa finds comfort in expressing herself, however, she doesn’t have the confidence to do it out in…
The painting Martyrdom of the Ten Thousand by Albrecht Durer was made in 1508. It was commissioned for the All Saints’ Church in Wittenberg, Germany. It is Oil on panel transferred to a canvas. What I found interesting is the amount of detail and how everywhere you look there’s something happening. The painting uses a pyramid layout to get a sense of balance. A color in the painting that only appears in one location is black which can be interpreted as death. It also shows men being led to their death. The northern renaissance, art was centered around religion and some art was mathematically calculated .…
"I am no bird; and no net ensnares me: I am a free human being with an independent will" (Charlotte Brontë). This quote represents what the women in the book Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Marquez would of wanted in their lives, but instead their freedom was taken over by man's greed. In the 1900's, women in Columbia were not able to make many choices for themselves. They were raised to suffer. Once they married a man, they were only their to please men and nothing else. Angela Vicario is one of those women. Angela Vicario was the prettiest girl in town, and in this town, the vulnerable girls get taken advantage of. A man named Bayardo San Roman comes in and says "reming me that I'm going to marry her" (Márquez 29). What he said in this quote automatically took away Angela's identity and made her into nothing but a whore in Bayardo's eyes. He does not care for love, but simply mere pleasure in the idea of being married to the prettiest girl in town. What Bayardo overlooks is Angela's virginity has already been taken by Santiago Nasar. As a result, Angela suffers even more by getting beat by her mother. In similar ways, other woman besides Angela have been treated by men in the ____ way like Prudencia Cotes, who is Pablo Vicario's wife.…

The definition of a hero seems to constantly be regarded as a person who is admired for their good deeds. I’ve always considered heroes to be people who aren’t just only appreciated for good deeds but similar to martyrs. The significant difference between my interpretation of a hero and a random martyr is that a martyr will suffer or die for a cause which ,most likely, will not benefit everyone while a hero will die for something that would have helped everyone.…
Stephen was selected to be part of an “expansion” project of the Church. The Church continued to get more and more converts and the Apostles needed more help. The apostles asked the disciples to choose seven of them amongst themselves to continue the works of the Apostles. Stephen was selected along with six others. Stephen started committing great works and signs for the people and this upset the Jews. Jews began to argue with Stephen, but Stephen had the Holy Spirit on his side so they couldn’t win a talking battle against him. Therefore, the angered Jews went and convinced people to say “We have heard Stephen speak blasphemous words against Moses and against God. Stephen was then brought to the Sanhedrin. He gave his speech to the Jews, but at the end he called the Jews “stiffnecked” people and rightfully accused them of persecuting many prophets. This angered the Sanhedrin and they sentenced him to death. They dragged Stephen out of the city and stoned him. Right before he died, Stephen said “Lord do not hold this sin against them”, he then died. Stephen was very significant because he was considered to be the first martyr.…
As she is the only major female character within the film, De heer portrays the innocence that is embedded within Josefina, a character that does not belong in the town of El Idilio nor with the presence of the injudicious Mayor and his regulations placed upon her. De heer not only portrays the innocence of this female character, but through the fundamentally kind-hearted man Antonio Bolivar. Despite his past, Antonio wishes to live a life full of happiness and joy, living without regrets and staying out of trouble. He accomplishes this by Josefina’s love of literature, which affects Antonio convincing him into reading these love stories. Antonio’s love for these stories deepens, as it does with Josefina, symbolizing the happy ending he wishes to spend with her as it ends in every book he reads, “It was a kiss of impassioned intensity. A kiss to remember their lives by”. De heer shows that the influence of Josefina has led to courage and confidence in Antonio, making him believe in opportunities and doing things he once thought he could never do, further presenting Josefina as a character convincing Antonio to believe and…

Figuratively, she mirrors how people are scared of what they don’t know and so we try to do the best we can to control the circumstances in our favor. “Three months ago it had been revealed to her in a dream that she would die, and from that time on she had felt closer than ever to this child of solitude.” After that dream, the way on how she lived her life had completely changed.
