“Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven: Humor”
Throughout “The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven” the theme of resilience is deliberately presented. Native Americans past and present continue to face stifling issues such as racism, alcoholism, isolation and suicide. Sherman Alexie makes it his obligation in his stories and poems to show Native American resiliency through humor. By using his characters to show resiliency through humor Alexie presents humor as an integral part of Native American survival.

The narrator in response says “I wanted to tell him that i didn't really fit the profile of the country, but i knew it would just get me into trouble"(cite book). In this scene the narrator is using humor to make light of a potentially dangerous situation. He knows that the police are stopping him because of racial prejudices of Native Americans. He also knows that someone in the neighborhood called the police because he looked suspicious. The resiliency is seen in the ability to laugh at these micro aggressions. Sherman Alexie writes this scene to show that despite the negative stereotypical views off Native Americans the ability to laugh shows this is the only way they will survive. He looks at the Spokane indian tribe and reservation. It speaks of the religion culture and and dance of the Spokane Indian people. It also speaks of the different hardships of growing up on he reservation such as alcholoism, gambling and suicide. This gives us insight into how Sherman Alexie had to counter adapt to his surrondings in order to not fall into these traps.
