The Long Drive: Will You Re-Up Next Year?

A cow town is simply a town in which cattle were taken to put on railroads. The only problem is, these towns are located in Kansas, about 1000 miles from Texas, a trip that usually takes up to 3 months. Because of this and water worries, low pay, and lack of sleep, I, along with 2/3 of those on this year’s drive, will not re-up for next year’s long drive. With the constant worry of a flooded river, unable to be crossed, or a stampede of thirsty cows as they sense water, I fear that I won’t re-up for this long journey. I will not re-up due to all of the chaos and danger from a stamped of cattle, in which my life could be taken as a stampeding cow tramples me (Document D). I’m also terrified of encountering an experience alike that of James Cook, where he encountered a flooded river in which he had to swim across (Document E). But I fear that these two are not the only reasons of me not joining again next year. I also wouldn’t like to re-up because of the lack of sleep. I remember how tired is was with 2 hours of sleep lost every single night due to having to keep watch of cattle (Document B) and how Cook had to smear tobacco juice into his eyes to stay awake (Document E). With having to keep watch on the cattle in case of raids or stampedes, I lost 2 hours of sleep each night, making it hard to stay awake will on horseback (Document B and E). But even with the troubles with water and sleep, I still might’ve joined the long drive again if not for the low pay despite all of these troubles. With the pay of an average cowboy being less than an average school teacher (Document B), I couldn’t fathom how I was paid less than a teacher when I worked so much harder and longer. I’ve decided not to do the long drive again because of only getting paid $30 (Document B), an amount not equal to the work it takes to do the long drive. Ultimately, I’ve decided not re-up for next year’s long drive because my constant worry about

In this book Bill Bryson is planning on hiking the entire 2,220 miles of the Appalachian Trial. He wanted to reacquaint himself with nature and his inner sense of self. In the beginning of the book he thought he would have to take this journey alone but he was joined by an old friend who he hadn’t talked to in a while. As he and Stephen Katz; his friend that had joined him started hiking the Appalachian Trial they were off pace and slow and they both hiked at different paces so they rarely hiked together. When I think about how slow and difficult the beginning was for them, it reminds me of how you will be as you begin your new journey, it will be completely new to you. There will be hardships there will be competition there will be new experiences that you will have to learn to deal with. There will be no one by your side telling you what turn to make next. They had a road map to tell them where to go and which way to turn but you do not, you have to make your own decisions and choose the path that you want to take without knowing the outcome or knowing where it leads.…

In document A there is a chart of the daily hours and index of average daily wages. It shows that daily hours went from 9.9 in 1875 to 9.4 in 1891. This is a very slight drop in daily hours considering most unionists were shooting for 8 hours of work a day. The wages didn’t go up much either. The index of daily wages went from 169.9 in 1875 to 172.5 in 1891. That is only a 3 dollar raise over the course of 16 years. It is very clear that the efforts of the unionist were unsuccessful in dropping work to their preferred limit and unsuccessful at raising wages to a desired rate. In document B a writer for The New York Times is claiming how hopeless the Great Railroad Strike of 1877 is. This shows how the newspapers and magazines were on the side of management because they felt labor was hostile.…

Before this trip, I had never climbed a mountain and this was more than just climbing a mountain. So I wasn’t really prepared mentally or physically to go on a trip that required carrying a 40 to 50 pound pack over steep, rocky trails at elevations ranging from 6,500 to 12,500 feet. Since I had a history of asthma when I was in middle school, I was a little nervous as I wasn’t sure if I will be able to complete this trip without being pulled out from the crew half way through the trip due to my asthma. This trip was the first time I prepared my own freeze-dried meals with boiling water on a stove. The whole aspect of coordination and teamwork was also very new to me since I had never been in a situation that required me to pace with my crew and navigate across a mountainous terrain using a compass. The most unique part of this trip was the 10 whole days I…

Needless to say, carter does not make any formal surveys when determining what his company should pay. He peruses the want ads almost every day and conducts informal surveys among his friends in the local chapter of the Laundry and Cleaning Trade association. While Jack has taken a “seat – of – the pants” approach to paying employees, his salary schedule has been guided by several basic pay policies. While many of his colleagues adhere to a policy of paying absolutely minimum rates, Jack has always followed a policy of paying his employees about 10% above what he feels are the prevailing rates, a policy that he believes reduces turnover while fostering employee loyalty. Of some what more concern to Jennifer is her father’s informal policy of paying men about 20% more than women for same job. Her father’s explanation is, “They’re Stronger and can work harder for longer hours, and besides they all have families to support.”The New Pay Plan:The New Pay Plan:…
