An author always, or should always, have a purpose in that and how they describe a situation. In this excerpt from The Long Way Gone we meet a truly horrific scene, bullet wounds, bleeding and dying people, not exactly a pretty picture. But the Authors purpose is to show how gruesome it was, just as the people in the story are seeing it the person reading the story is seeing it.
