The Lord of the Rings' Trilogy: Analysis of Its Marketing Strategy
In 1996, director Peter Jackson embarked upon a seven year odyssey and one of the most demanding projects in movie history, bringing the hugely popular series of compelling novels 'The Lord of the Rings' written in the 1950's by JRR Tolkien, to the big screen. After years of careful and precise production planning, Jackson had before him the dual task of not only tempting a movie audience and creating a financially viable movie, but he also had to appeal to the colossal cult following of JRR Tolkien's novels written half a century previously.

There is always a great deal of expectation surrounding any multi-million dollar movie adaptation from a powerfully recognisable novel however 'The Lord of the Rings' was awaited with even more anticipation, due to its phenomenal Tolkien fan-base from the novels, and that for the first time in movie history there was technology available to create the 'Tolkien World' and with a hefty $300 million to make the trilogy for the first time the resources were available to make a movie trilogy of the scale that would do Tolkien proud. Much of the following that Tolkien had gained throughout the novels would go into watching the movie with a sense of scepticism, as they would be curious about Jackson's loyalty to Tolkien's work. The popularity of 'The Lord of the Rings' was evident when the trailer for 'The Fellowship of the Ring' was first released on the Internet on 7 April 2000, it was downloaded a hectic 1.6 million times within its first 24 hours of operation. People who watched the 'The Fellowship of the Ring' trailer, would be able to see a brief insight of how Jackson's interpretation of the Tolkien novels, compares to your own, therefore you have the chance to compare and contrast 'Gandalf', 'Frodo' and 'Middle Earth, also the opportunity to get a feel for the movie, with the amazing score that was put into all of the 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy by a collection of artists, Enya, David Donaldson, and Howard Shore, and the

    In the movie Jackson makes Bilbo a hero and a thief when he is trying to get a knife from the trolls to save his ponies. In the in the book Bilbo is trying to steal money from the trolls enormous pocket. Then Bilbo gets exposed and captured by the trolls when he tries to steal money in the troll’s pocket. As evidence, “Then Biblo Plucked up the courage and put his hand in William’s enormous pocket. There was a purse in it, as big as a bag to Biblo ‘Ha’ thought he, warming to his new work as he lifted it carefully out, ‘this is a beginning!’” (Tolkien 36). The trolls have a speaking wallet in the book that makes the trolls look back at Bilbo and this in turn makes the trolls capture Bilbo and the Dwarves. In the movie Jackson makes Biblo a tissue. The trolls wipe their boogers all over Bilbo. They also think Bilbo is a live “squirrel” (Jackson). So the trolls freak out and that makes some audiences laugh. Instead of having a magic wallet talk Jackson has Bilbo stealing a knife which shows his courage given the circumstances. Afterwards, one of the trolls picks Bilbo up and sneezes all over him. Then the troll throws him because the troll thinks Bilbo came out of his nose. This illustrates how the movie is more effective because the humor and the different scenes such as the one shown above or below makes the audience more inclined to see the movie. Also the director gets the exactly right angle of Bilbo and the trolls section that he makes it look ominous and intriguing.     One thing I noticed was the use of several different themes included in both stories. In the Lord of the Rings the inhabitants of Middle Earth join to save themselves from enslavement. Centuries before, a ring was forged putting much power into control of who had it. Some men fell into that power, but an alliance of men and elves defeated it. The Ring was cut from Sauron hand. Sauron was a antagonist character who was pursuing the power by wearing the ring. After being cut from Saurons hand, the ring should have been destroyed, but a human prince, Isildur, took it. Isildur was slain, and the Ring fell into a river. Myth also played a part in The Lord of the Rings, the sense of transience and lost grandeur that pervades The Lord of the Rings goes, in part, with the territory in which Tolkien is wading. He writes the novel in a mythic mode, and one of the conventions of myth is that it describes a past that is more glorious than the present. This sense of loss certainly is present in the Greek myths, for example, or in Homer’s epic poems that draw on these myths—both of which describe a world in which men and gods mix freely, a world that is no more. Tolkien’s own work is something between mythology and fiction, locating itself in a middle ground between a past that is remembered only in song and the everyday present of the reader. This sense of ancientness is constantly present, brought to life in chants, poems, and graven inscriptions.
