The Loss of a Loved One

Have you ever felt the suffering of someone just by listening to a song? Here, there are two different songs, ‘’Funeral Blues’’ by Nemo Shaw and ‘’Don’t You Remember?’’ by Adele. Talk about the loss of a loved one, but in two different ways. ‘’Funeral Blues’’ the lyrics are addressed to the singer himself; in contrast, ‘’Don´t You Remember?’’ is addressed to the person who left her (the song writer). ‘’Funeral Blues’’ was written because someone died: on the other hand, ‘’don’t You Remember?’’ was written because someone left. These songs are different not only because of the message that comes with it, but also because of its components, such as stanzas, refrains, rhyme and the music.

These songs show us different ways of losing a loved one and also the reaction of the person who lost his/her loved one, ‘’Funeral Blues’’ talks about a physical loss; in contrast, ‘’Don’t You Remember?’’ talks about an emotional loss. Also the reaction of the people who lost their loved one is different. In ‘’Funeral Blues’’ the singer says that it is the final; on the other hand, the singer in ‘’Don’t You Remember?’’ is hoping that the person who left will come back to her.

The stanzas, refrain, and rhyme are integral components of a song. ‘’Funeral Blues’’ has five stanzas; in contrast, ‘’don’t You Remember?’’ has seven stanzas, both ‘’Funeral Blues’’ and ‘’don’t You Remember?’’ have refrain, but in ‘’Funeral Blues’’ the refrain is the stanza number three; on the other hand, the refrain in ‘’Don’t You Remember?’’ is in stanzas number two and three. ‘’Funeral Blues’’ has end rhyme, for example: Public doves / Cotton gloves, likewise ‘’Don’t You Remember?’’, for example: You loved me before / Remember me once more.

Songs are composed of two things: music and lyrics, and both are essential to make the song powerful. The music in ‘’Funeral Blues’’ is slow and sad; in contrast, the music in ‘’Don’t You Remember?’’ is modern and relaxing. The lyrics in ‘’Funeral Blues’’ are hopeless and sad; on the other hand, the lyrics in ‘’Don’t You Remember?’’ are romantic and show true love. When combining both music and lyrics the mood ‘’Funeral Blues’’ is very sad and depressing; on the other hand, in ‘’don’t You Remember?’’ the music and the lyrics set a hopeful and emotional mood.
Each of these songs is different, not only because of the message that comes with it but also because of its components. I selected this song because I really liked it. I think that it has a beautiful message, and it is emotional, but I am not personally connected to the song.
