First of all, the main difference in perception on time has to do with how closely the main characters are viewing the time. In the first vinett, “The Lost year”, the main character isn’t waiting on time, but instead watching it go by extremely fast. “At times he tried to remember and just when he thought everything was clearing up, he would be at a lost for words” (Rivera 75). Without anything to highlight the certain times, the character became separated from
time. Further, as he became separated from the time, there is a sense of loss of identity. He cannot relate to anything that has happened because he wasn’t included and did not belong. He was an outsider looking at the time, instead of being with the majority and being with time. In comparison, in the vinett “The Children Couldn’t Wait” the child had such a clear connection to time that the kid was dependent on time moving.“‘I’m very thirsty Dad. Is the boss gonna be here soon? No, wait just a little longer…” Rivera 77). The kids identity was correlated directly to the time. This idea is shown when the child is constantly asking when activities are going to occur. Overall, these vignettes are different in the sense that the characters have different connections to time which leads to different outcomes. In conclusion the characters in the vignettes in the book And the Earth Did Not Devour Him, should two characters that had a strong correlation with time, “The Children Couldn’t Wait” and a weak connection with time, “The Lost Year”.
