Firstly, at the beginning, some boys (Bobby Martin, Dickie Delacroix, Harry and Bobby Jones) “assembled first, of course” and those boys have already begun collecting stones, at the end of the story there’re also a sentence to describe the behavior of those kids “The children had stones already. And someone gave little Davy Hutchinson few pebbles.” It’s pretty striking how much the boys of the village tell us, not only about the nature of the lottery, but also about the raw feeling underlying this village ritual. Secondly, while the boys are the vicious, primitive spirit that drives its enjoyment, there also should have a person who stands in for tradition, the character is called old man Warner, he is the oldest man in village, always saying that “lottery in June, corn be heavy soon”, as the voice of tradition. The last character I have to mention is the victims of this time’s lottery——Mrs. Hutchinson. Her ending is stoned to death.
