The Lottery Introduction (Mrs. Hutchinson’s POV)
In the crisp summer morning, the birds were chirping, and the sun gleamed through the crack in my window. It was June 27th- one of the most important days in the year for my village. Today was the great day that someone would be chosen in the lottery. The lottery was a mysterious ritual that occurred in the village. No one understood the purpose of it, but it was held every year on the 27th of June. In the excitement of the event, I rushed out of bed and got ready for it. After preparing myself for the big day, I left for the square to realize that the rest of my family went without me.

I was just getting ready when my Bill and the kids just left without me,” I asked.
“Don’t worry Tessie, we were all just waiting for you. Go on and find your family. We are just about to start,” she replied.
I gently nodded to her and proceeded to find my family before the lottery started. I quickly saw Bill’s dark brown hair, and I joined my him and the kids for the start of the ritual.
When it was confirmed that everyone was present at the square, Mr. Summers began calling up the families to draw slips of paper out of a black box.
“It is now the Hutchinson’s turn,” said Mr. Summers.
My family and I went up to go grab a slip from the box. After everyone had gotten their slips, we would be able to see if we were the chosen family. While the rest of the families were picking, I peered to the left of the stage out of the corner of my eye to notice that the kids from earlier were moving all their rocks to towards the stage. At the sight of this, I began to wonder what they were doing with them. By the time the kids completed transporting the rocks to the platform, all the remaining families got their chance to pick a slip.
