While T.S Eliot took this poem as more to a man feeling insecure I took this poem as a love failure, as if a love that never happened and that would not ever happen because of lack of courage/bravery. The insecurities of the man took him to feel humiliated and rejected because of his age.
This poem starts by a man attending to a social gathering but he doubts to go because he feels insecure to face women. Alfred Prufrock feels too old and he thinks others may be thinking the same, while everything is just his own imagination. He worries too much about …show more content…
what others may be thinking.
The other tries to point out that many traits of Prufrock’s character reveal him as a man whose concern with the passage of time, meaning that he only cares about how he is going to spend his time.
In addition, Prufrock’s obsession with time is illustrated when he encounters people who humiliate his appearance, but it’s only himself who is constantly aware of the shortcomings of age. The message
T.S. Eliot is trying to reveal towards this character is how your own insecurity about your appearance can lead you to the conclusion that others see you the same as you think.
The title itself is ironic because this poem is not necessarily about “love” but about low selfesteem.
Prufrock doesn’t believe good things will ever happen to him or even get to love him. Many repetitions of Prufrock reveal his preoccupation for the time. The repetition is evident about his feelings towards his age. For example when he says, “I grow old … I grow old …”(120), this makes the audience question and think that Alfred Prufrock is very unattractive because he is old. He does not feel comfortable in society and seems to be tired of it because of the superficial existence. On the other hand, this poem can also be taken into a different point of view. The audience may view
Prufrock’s actions more as sexualdesire rather than feeling insecure about
himself.
Overall I think that we shouldn’t worry about what others will think about us. We often worry about what others may say or think if we do something. Worrying about what someone may think can be interesting and could help us to change something about ourselves that will make us a better person, but it can also be something bad if you give too much importance to it. We need to realize that it doesn’t matter how insecure we feel towards ourselves, we need to overcome this, and don’t let others make you become more afraid of what you already are.
