The Man In Those Winter Sundays Essay
Poets create poetry based on their lives and experiences. While reading poetry each reader can interpret what the poem is about. The reader can take those words and relate them back to their own lives. While I read the poetry I related the stories to own life and found that these people have problems greater than mine. Poetry taught me that I need to value and appreciate my life because some people have it worse. Growing up I had two parents that were together and both loved me. My Father was a hardworking man and yet he had no problem showing me love or even telling me that he loved. I found this to be normal for a father to show love to his son but I found out that not every child has that privilege. The man in the Those Winter Sundays by Robert Hayden reminded very much of my own father until the last two lines of the poem. The poem is about a man who reflects on his life as a child and how his father work hard to keep the family happy. The father warms the house for his kids and also polishes his …show more content…
A part of that was due to how big and tall I was, so I never had anyone say something mean to me. Although this is quite normal the poem Barbie Doll by Marge Piercy made it stand out to me even more. The poem is about a girl who is made fun during her puberty stage about her large nose and large legs. The poem continues to the point where the girl is basically dead because of plastic surgery and makeup. The author uses a funeral as a symbol by saying “In the casket displayed on satin she lay with the undertaker's cosmetics painted on, a turned-up putty nose, dressed in a pink and white nightie.” (Piercy 239). The symbol of the funeral is used show the death of the girl because her old self died through all the changes made to her body. Due to the fact this barley happen to me I didn’t understand this extreme feeling of change. I am lucky and I know to value that this was never part of my

Both Robert Hayden and Theodore Roethke depicts how fathers in both poems love their child, but shows in different ways. “Those Winter Sundays” in line 1 Hayden states “Sundays too my father got up early,” and in line 5 “banked fires blaze.” These lines show how the father in “Those Winter Sundays” always got up early to set up a fire in the house in order warm up the house before the family got up. The father never cared for how early and how cold it was, he would always get up take care of the fire not for himself but for the family. This shows how the father is always there for the family but is not upfront with showing his love, he shows his love through doing what he thinks with help his family. In contrast, “My Papa’s Waltz” the father…

Parenting is intended to guide children toward an independent adulthood. Morals and lessons are developed through discipline, imitation, and learned respect for oneself and society. Some parents show love and affection whereas others shape their children with respect and stern discipline. In the poems "Those Winter Sundays" by Robert Hayden and "My Papa's Waltz" by Theodore Roethke, a relationship between a father and son are portrayed as both authors reflect on their own childhood experiences. While the two poems have similarities; in that, the fathers work hard and believe in stern punishment, they also have several contrasting ideas in parenting that separate their respective roles as fathers.…

In the poem “Those Winter Sundays” the father is described to wake up every morning even on Sundays also, to warm the house up for his child. He worked all week doing labor and “No one ever thanked him” is a hint that people around him were very unappreciative. The narrator, in the last two sentences said, “what did I know, what did I know of love’s austere and lonely offices” and he realizes what his father was doing for him. He felt that in the beginning his dad didn’t really care for him because the love wasn’t shown upfront with hugs, kisses and words.…

Fun fact, did you know that hares leave their newborn babies alone for long periods of time, that doesn’t seem like the strongest family connection? Similarly, humans don’t have the happiest and healthiest of relationships, either. The Possessive by Sharon Olds describes a family scenario where the mom grieves as she feels she is losing control over her daughter. In “Those Winter Sundays”, there is a theme of sacrificing for your family, regardless of the lack of appreciation given back. While both are attention grabbing stories, between the two, “The Possessive” by Sharon Olds evokes the interest of readers more than “Those Winter Sundays” by Robert Hayden because of the intense imagery that grasps the reader’s attention.…

One of the most powerful relationships someone ever forms is the connection that they have with their own father. “Those Winter Sundays” by Robert Hayden and “My Papa’s Waltz” by Theodore Roethke are both poems that brilliantly describe this powerful relationship between father and son. The feelings that the poets have toward the subject are found deep within the two poems often hidden behind how the character feels toward his own father. Even though these poems were published in different time periods, one feels the similarities and differences within the tone, form, or even the imagery of the poems.…

Hayden makes the reader feel and suffer the bitter cold, by appealing to our senses of touch and sight. We can hear the sounds of the wood in the heat as '"'splintering, breaking'"' (line 6) and we can also see the light and feel the warmth. The family apparently did not have central heating, for in order to warm the house in the winter, he had to get up before the rest of the family and make '"'banked fires blaze'"'(line 5). The father"'"s love is expressed in the fact that he works so hard six days of the week, hard enough to have aching and cracked hands. His love is also expressed in the fact that despite the "cold splintering" (line 6) of the house, he gets out of his warm bed every morning to start the fire.…

Everyone goes through tough times, like breakups for example and reading poems about getting over tough times can aid in the healing of a broken heart. Imagine how many people wouldn’t have been able to get over their tough times if they didn’t have poetry. In the essay Blasphemy written by Martin Espada, he writes about a man named Sam Hamill who found serenity in poetry. Espada reports that “the poet (Hamill) concludes that he is ‘the luckiest son-of-a-bitch alive.’” Espada claims that “It was his (Hamill’s) ‘dumb luck’ to discovery poetry.” Sam Hamill was a troubled child who was in and out of jail at the age of 14, yet that all turned around when he discovered poetry and became a poet. Poetry can also inspire people who aren’t even searching for inspiration. Sandra Beasley states in her essay Earning Our Laurel Leaves that: “poems can inspire and spur action: something as simple as the right metaphor can shift the reader’s understanding.” Both authors infer that poetry is very valuable and that it can help people in many ways. Poetry has the power to both aid and inspire people by simply just…

The hard work done by a father is typically overseen by those who rely upon it. It is ever apparent in the poem, Those Winter Sundays, by Robert Hayden. In the poem, the speaker tells of the many cold days his father would wake up early in order to make his family’s life more comfortable. These are thankless acts that are not for acknowledgement nor thanks, but for the love of his family. Work goes unnoticed bysp the youth of the family just as much now as it did when this poem was made. Only once the speaker had grown did he realize how much effort his father put towards the comfort of his family. The ungratefulness for his father’s work is what the speaker reminisces on in a sense of regret, unappreciative regret. Through symbolism, imagery, and tone, Hayden reminisces on the thankless efforts of his father.…

Poetry is really unique because there is a lot of meaning and symbolism in every poem. It is like a picture. Some pictures can say a thousand words and some poems can give a thousand meanings. In some poems it can be about the hardships in everyone's lives or the happy things in life. In other poems it can be just about the things the author feels. Such is the case in John Milton's poem "When I Consider how my light is spent". The poem seems to be about Milton, however it has more meaning and can be reflected onto anyone.…

“ Poetry is language at its most distilled and most powerful.” - Rita Dove. Poems are like fingerprints. All poems are completely unique and different, but yet they are all the same. All poems consist of something their writers are passionate about, much like how fingerprints are completely unique, but the entire human race has one. Most poems could also have double meanings. For instance, the poem “ Fire - Caught ” by Langston Hughes could have multiple meanings, like someone giving into temptation, the actual connection of a moth and a fire, or it could be a telling story about someone falling for something too good to be true.…
