Children and Fear
There are many writings and movies talking about “Children and Fear” that everyone somehow experiences at least one of those feelings. The fear of being abandoned and not being loved of the main character Jung in “Approved for Adoption” movie in 2012. Meanwhile, “The Man on the Ceiling” by Ms. Tem mentions about the dreams of death people or faceless lady with a knife in her hand that extremely obsess the children. Besides, the most common fear is the fear of being harmed or eaten by the wolf of the little pigs in “The Three Pigs” by Bettelheim that usually appears on stories and movies to lesson children about life. Tem. The dreams just come by themselves and scare the little boy – Joe and the teenage girl. Joe dreams about his death dog to come back to life. He even dreams about Anthony dying and mourns him who he never knows. He also dreams about how his birthparents hurt and left him. In the other hand, Ms. Tem’s teenage daughter always has night terrors with serial killers and a faceless lady standing with a knife by her bed. She is afraid of being killed and afraid of love as well. Ms. Tem writes, “If you love someone, they leave you. But if you don’t love someone, they leave you, too. So your choice isn’t between loving and losing but only between loving and not loving.” We never know what will happen in the future, so we never know when will we lose our loved people. After all, someone will leave us by some ways intentionally or unintentionally, which we just can accept. There are three little pigs in the story that present for different kinds of how we take care things around us. The first two little pigs built their house with straw and kindling, which they thought that was enough to protect them from the wolf. Unfortunately, they were eaten as the same result. On contrary, the third little one took much more care of his house with bricks, which did not let him play much at first as the previous two. However, after all he absolutely enjoyed his life even though the wolf that presented for monster and violence came and tried to destroy the little pig’s house. The third little one always took precaution against the wolf, so that he won. Betterheim writes, “The question for a child is not “Do I want to be good?” but “Who do I want to be like?” The child decides this on the basis of projecting himself wholeheartedly into one character.” This story is told to many children that we should be aware of the evil such as the wolf. The two first little pigs were not bad, but they did not take care of their lives well enough to prevent the wolf. Besides, the third little one is an actual example of effort to do something really well and then we will receive the better
