He even dreams about Anthony dying and mourns him who he never knows. He also dreams about how his birthparents hurt and left him. In the other hand, Ms. Tem’s teenage daughter always has night terrors with serial killers and a faceless lady standing with a knife by her bed. In “My Creature From the Black Lagoon”, Stephen King compares and contrasts how children and adults handle fear, specifically in movies. His main argument is that the fear experienced by both adults and children is the result of a focus on the movie in which all emotions are fixated on the movies, and there is no logical thinking of the unrealism. In other words, their fixation allows for their imagination to dominate.…

“Kill the pig! Cut his throat! Kill the pig! Bash him in!” One of the first examples of the loss of innocence and emergence of a savage culture between the boys is demonstrated in this quote; the initial loss occurring during the killing of the pig, the emergence of savagery in the reenactment of the hunt. The natural degeneration of the order of the inner culture of the boys versus what little democratic opposition they have within that culture is the key symbolic theme of the Lord of the Flies.…

Children are a mixture of many parts which intertwine in different ways and change over time. A very crucial aspect of their development is their cognitive development. Cognitive development “is change or stability in mental abilities such as learning, attention, memory, language, thinking, reasoning and creativity and psycho-social development which is change and stability in emotions, personality and social relationships” (Adesola, A. F., PhD., & Olufunmilayo, O. E., PhD., 2013). The influence of what happens in the mind of children has several different theories…

Besides enjoyment, these fables offer moral lessons to learn for children and adults alike. People have been reading these two fables to children since the early 1800s. There are many variations of the fables, as they have changed or been updated by different authors over time. These two fables are classic stories that will never get old to parents or children. When Goldilocks entered the bears’ home while they were out, and without their permission, she violated their privacy. She also ate the bears’ food, sat on their furniture and slept in their beds. By hearing or reading this, a child learns to respect the property of others and to respect other peoples’ privacy too (Bruno Bettelheim, 1989). This is a lesson children can also use in their adult lives. These two fables offer lessons a child will never forget. In the fable of the three little pigs (J.M. Soden), the first two pigs were more interested in playing. They rushed to build their homes with unreliable materials, and without a proper, well-laid plan in place. When the wolf tried to blow their houses down, he succeeded, and he ate the first two pigs. If the first two pigs planned better, like their brother, the third pig, they would still be alive. This fable teaches people to plan properly before seeking pleasure. Work comes first, and play comes later.…

Food is a necessity and without food we wouldn’t be able to survive. But what happens when that very essential thing we need to survive is not good for us? According to the website Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than one-third of Americans have obesity (Adult Obesity Facts). One of the major reasons causing obesity is a poor diet, what some call, the Western Diet. In Michael Pollan article “Escape from the Western Diet”, he argues that people should give up the western diet. Pollan reaffirm readers, that those who indulge in the ways of the western diet are prone to a variety of chronic diseases. The western diet, he argues, is not good and should be put to an end. As Pollan asserts, people should focus more on eating…

The Opium War, directed by Jin Xie, paints a rather impartial account of the Opium War, starting with the appointment of Lin Zexu to end the opium trade in China to the signing of the Treaty of Nanking. This film seemed to fairly depict the faults of both the Chinese and the British during the 1830's and up to 1842. That said, The Opium War illustrated two important factors that both helped to promote the conflict and eventual military confrontation between China and Britain.…
