the masque of red death
Unit 2 Study Guide - The following is a list of terms/people/events - they are a majority of what you need to study for your quizzes and unit test, but not everything. On top of this, study your notes as well, but I just put these terms so that you put a little bit of extra emphasis on them.
For each term or idea – it is good to assess the definition, as well as the following: who, what, where, when, why, and how. The WHY is very important. Not all terms have all of the Ws, so if you can’t fine one on a topic, don’t worry. For people, why do we need to know about them/why were they so influential? Don’t just define them, but put the term in the larger historical context.

Throughout the years 1880 through 1925 the United States witnessed a rise in immigration. Industrialization provided greater opportunities for Americans. America’s gilded age gave off the illusion of a utopian society. The visions of such society attracted many foreigners from parts of Europe and Asia. Though these foreigners helped with the expansion of the U.S, economic, political, and social tensions arose. These tensions included scarcity of jobs for natural-born citizens, American suspicion of European communism, and the immigrant resistance to Americanization. In response the government implemented different measures such as the immigration act of 1924, the emergency quota act and…

Both influential writers in the time of early American literature, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allen Poe explored the dark motives of the human psyche. In “The Minister’s Black Veil”, a short story by Hawthorne, the town’s minister, Mr. Hooper steps out into the street one day wearing a black veil that covers his face. His clergymen cannot bear to see him plainly profess his sins and instead separate themselves in an attempt to deny the truth that all people are flawed, but are eventually forced to accept it. In Poe’s short story, “The Masque of the Red Death”, Prince Prospero and his merrymakers lock themselves within a castellated abbey in an attempt to escape the horrible “Red Death” that ravages the lives of the…

Immigration into the land of opportunity had been a bumpy road for those arriving between 1870 and 1900. Of all the years during that time period, the flow of immigrants was at its peak during the bursts of economic depressions (Document A). These weakened economic periods in the United States did not exactly ease the common immigrants transition into American life. With no yellow brick road to lead them to happiness and prosperity, many immigrants began searching for quick ways to make cash. In 1870, twenty percent of the New England population was made up of immigrants; an astounding seventy five percent of the crimes committed were perpetrated by those immigrants (Document B). Edward Steiner, an immigrant himself, recalls his experiences as a newcomer. unless he had waiting friends, [the immigrant] found no gateway open to him except the saloon, the brothel, the cheap lodging house and finally the lock up (Document C).Steiner observed a strong incline for criminal activity among immigrants; it was therefore easy for natives to label many of the immigrants as stereotypical criminals and low-lifes, scarring the reputation of the hard working foreigners as well. Steiner further explains that even assimilation agencies were anti-social, and the police would back them up. The spread of alien perpetrators gave domestic Americans a reason to fervently oppose arriving immigrants.…

Most people’s perception of fear comes from negative standpoint, where fear is the evil villain that you try to get away from, but can fear also be helpful? In all good stories, there is always a dilemma, and with the struggle of that problem comes fear, but what truly shows that character’s mental strength or personality is how they handle that problem. In the stories, ¨The Tell-Tale Heart,” ¨The Pit and the Pendulum,”and ¨The Masque of the Red Death,” all of the main characters experience fear, but handle it in very different ways. Whether they use that fear to help them overcome the problem, or their fear results in paranoia. Edgar Allan Poe uses symbolism, irony, and figurative language to portray how fear distorts the emotional state…

As a child, everyone is guilty of stealing the last cookie or snatching their favorite colored marker to draw with. This is human instinct, but it is not for survival anymore. Repercussions such as timeout time are often just around the corner after these actions. This greedy acquisition of material goods met with consequences can be attributed to karma. Washington Irving, Stephen Vincent Benet, and Edgar Allen Poe demonstrate these ideas of karma in their respective books, The Devil and Tom Walker, The Devil and Daniel Webster, and The Masque of the Red Death. Romantics value intuition and feeling in order to reach self realization in contrast to rationalists’ value of reason and goods to create a better life. In romantics eyes self realization…
