The Master By William Craft Sparknotes

William Craft’s use of the word master through out the narrative challenges the natural order of the master/slave relationship in the south. I believe that Craft challenges this natural order because when Craft and his wife Ellen were making their thousand-mile journey to freedom William would call Ellen master. William would call his wife master because she was disguised as a white male and William was playing the role of the slave. This challenges the order of the master/slave relationship because it shows how weak the relationship between the masters and slaves were. Since, a slave white women could dress up in a disguise and act like a master of a slave then the slaves have broken the so called natural order of the master/slave relationship and proved that the masters have no more power over them than anyone else. William Craft’s writing skills in this narrative seemed very sophisticated. How William would describe the laws throughout the narrative and how he would write the quotes in a stanza really grabbed my attention. Personally, Craft’s writing skills were very good being that he never knew how to read and write until
I understand at the time this was not a funny matter. This was a way for two slaves to finally after years of slavery escape and enjoy the freedom that every human should have from their birth. That being said, they way Ellen dressed up with her green spectacles and her home man jeans was humorous. What really made this a humorous topic was Ellen played the part of a white slave owner so well that both her and William actually escape to the Boston where they obtain their freedom. This task was amazing and funny because Ellen was able to role play a master and trick all the southern people on the train that she was
