In this paper, “The Matrix” will be analyzed as an example of a mono-myth, by identifying selected topics such as the different stages of the hero’s journey, mythical themes and patterns, and the different archetypes found in the film.
The Matrix is a movie written and directed by the Wachowski brothers. The story of the film revolves around Thomas A. Anderson (Keanu Reeves) who is a computer programmer by day and a hacker named "Neo" by night. He has spent all of his life intuiting that there might be something else. He seems to be living alone as there are not any signs of family or companion. In the first scenes of the film, we can see how Neo cant remained still and he is constantly searching for something. He doesn’t feel like he belongs there and believes that there has to be something greater, a “truth” that he must find.
The call to Adventure takes place when Neo receives a cryptic message on his computer saying “The Matrix has you. Follow the white rabbit.” He was very confused at first but then, after a client and a woman knocked on his door, he saw a tattoo of a white rabbit on the woman’s shoulder. At that point he knew it was his destiny to follow her. Neo followed this girl and arrived at a nightclub where he had his first encounter with Trinity. She whispers him that a man named Morpheus can explain the meaning of “The Matrix”. The next day, while Neo was at his office he receives a call from Morpheus, a famous hacker that he idolized. Those tests and trials were represented by the training programs in which Neo learned martial arts, how to identify agents in the matrix and the jumping simulation which he failed to complete. Since Morpheus believed that Neo was “The One” he decided to fight Neo to test his skills in a fight that the rest of the crew watched. During these training programs, Neo also learned that any injury that he gets in The Matrix can also affect him in the real world. This means that even though The Matrix was not real, he could die.
